What to Watch on Friday: "Dollhouse" comes to an end

Dollhouse (8pm, Fox) - Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" series finale airs with an episode that is meant to conclude a storyline that was introduced in the season one finale. The tricky thing is that episode from season one wasn't widely seen because it was only included in the dvd set. It's a little confusing, so here's more info.

Kitchen Nightmares (9pm, Fox) - The second season opener has chef Gordon Ramsay visiting the Hot Potato Cafe in Philadelphia.

20/20 (10pm, ABC) - Andrew Young discusses his new book about his former boss, John Edwards. You can watch more on "Nightline" at 11:35.

Miss America: Behind the Curtain (10pm, TLC) -  A one-hour special hosted by "What Not to Wear's" Clinton Kelly, who shows you all the stuff leading up to the big pageant (which airs tomorrow night on TLC).

What to Watch on Friday: Letterman blackmail plays out on "Law & Order"

Law & Order (8pm, NBC) - In a twist on the Letterman blackmail story, Samantha Bee ("The Daily Show") plays a daytime talkshow host embroiled in scandal with connections to the murder of a freelance journalist.

Dollhouse (9pm, Fox) - Echo and the team travel to Arizona in an attempt to dismantle the Rossum Corporation's mainframe. Series finale is next week!

Medium (9pm, CBS) - Devalos revisits a past horror on the anniversary of his daughter's death, and Allison has dreams that shed new light on the mystery.

The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien (NBC) / The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS) (11:35pm) - These two late night shows have been great all week, and things are unlikely to settle down any time soon. Watch one of these and tape the other.

What to Watch on Friday: Pixar's "Cars" and "Short Films" special

Cars (7:30pm, ABC Family) - The great Disney/Pixar film from 2006 about a hot rod (Owen Wilson) who gets sidetracked in a small town on his way to a big race. Also featuring the voices of Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Tony Shalhoub, and Larry the Cable Guy. Followed by a "Pixar Short Films" special at 10pm.

Dollhouse (8pm, Fox) - Victor's contract with the Dollhouse expires and he's released back into the world. Then, Echo experiences her worst nightmare when it's determined she's too dangerous. Two episodes.

20/20 (10pm, ABC) - Chris Cuomo joins the show tonight as co-anchor to Elizabeth Vargas. He'll do great here, but he's sorely missed on GMA...

What to Watch on Friday: Benjamin Bratt returns to "Law & Order"

Law & Order (8pm, NBC) - The disfigured body of a campaign workers is found with the word "FED" scrawled across his chest. Benjamin Bratt (left), who played Det. Rey Curtis from 1995 to 1999, returns tonight for one episode.

Dollhouse (8pm, Fox) - Two episodes tonight. First up, Echo is lost in the world-at-large while dealing with multiple-memory-downloads. Later, the murders of Echo's past romantic liasons may indicate the return of Alpha.

HALO Awards (9pm, Nik) - Four teenagers who have taken leadership roles in their communities are rewarded with scholarship money and other special perks. Hosted by Nick Cannon and featuring LeBron James, Alicia Keys, Hayden Panettiere, and Justin Timberlake.

Canceled: Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" to end

Because of its low ratings last year, it's really a wonder that "Dollhouse" got a second season from Fox at all. So this cancelation shouldn't be a big surprise. A disappointment, certainly. But not a surprise.

"Dollhouse" has a small but devoted following, mostly people who dig anything show creator Joss Whedon touches ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," "Angel"). It's a good show, but for whatever reason, just never caught on.

Fox is allowing the show to finish out it's 13-episode run. Whedon is currently filming episode #11, so hopefully he'll be able to bring closure to all twelve of the show's fans. The finale is tentatively scheduled for January 22.

What to Watch on Friday: National Parks documentary wraps up

The National Parks: America's Best Idea (8pm, UNC-TV) - The finale of the Ken Burns doc series on America's national parks wraps up with the 1946-1980 era. After WWII, park attendance increases dramatically, leading to a billion-dollar campaign to improve park facilities. Also, President Jimmy Carter sets aside 56 million acres of land in Alaska for preservation.

Medium (9pm, CBS) - Allison thinks a slain revenge-seeking stripper is inhabiting her daughter Ariel's body. That puts a whole new urgency to 'keeping them off the pole.'

Dollhouse (9pm, Fox) - Echo has an intense reaction to Topher's imprint of a new mother.

Rescue Ink Unleashed (10pm, National Geographic Channel) - A great new show about a bunch of inked-out bikers who go around rescuing cats and dogs. This is a real organization, not just a bunch of fools banding together to get on TV. But it is great TV.

What to Watch on Friday: L&O and a 'ghost block' part of busy debut night

Law & Order (8pm, NBC) - "Law & Order" enters its 20th season, as well as a new night and earlier timeslot. Tonight, a law professor is scrutinized when a war veteran is found dead in a university parking garage. Later this season, our beloved L-T, Liet. Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson, left) will battle cancer.

Brothers (8pm, Fox) - A brand new show starring former NFL defensive end Michael Strahan as a broke football player who moves back home with this brother, played by Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, his mom, CCH Pounder, and his dad, Carl Weathers. Great cast!

Smallville (8pm, CW) - "Smallville" starts season nine on a different night. Tonight, Jor-El tells Clark to end things with Lois, but the heart wants what it wants. Brian Austin Green joins the cast as a new reporter working with Lois.

Ghost Whisperer (8pm, CBS)
- Melinda delivers a tiny little ghost whisperer of her very own in tonight's premiere, which is also directed by Jennifer Love Hewitt. The show then takes a "Desperate Houswives" style leap five years into the future.

Medium (9pm, CBS) - The second half of CBS's Friday Ghost Block features NBC's castoff thriller starring Patricia Arquette. The show's producers say there will be no changes to the show, even though it's skipping to a new network. Tonight's premiere picks up four months after last season's finale, and Allison is out of her coma. But will her powers be the same?

Dollhouse (9pm, Fox) - Season two and Echo's first mission is to marry a British businessman linked to a former FBI agent's open case.

Numb3rs (10pm, CBS) - In tonight's premiere, we'll find out if Amita accepted Charlie's marriage proposal. In other business, the team is protecting a political activist who may be the target of a sniper.

Real Time with Bill Maher (10pm, HBO) - This isn't a season premiere, but one of Bill's guests tonight is former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Don't expect Maher to castigate Spitzer for the cheating, but still, it should be interesting.

NEW SHOW: "Dollhouse"

I remember watching "The Body", the Season 5 episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," in which Buffy's mother dies, and thinking that it was one of the best hours of television I'd ever seen. I still feel that way.

So as far as I'm concerned Joss Whedon doesn't have to do anything else. Not many people get to make even one great piece of art.

I guess it's a good thing that Whedon isn't as easy to satisfy as I am. His new show "Dollhouse" premieres tonight on Fox at 9.

It stars a "Buffy" actress Eliza Dushku, who played bad slayer Faith. In "Dollhouse" she's Echo, a woman who lives in a high-tech encampment, in the employ of a secret company that provides dolls or "actives" for wealthy clients. The dolls perform various jobs for the clients; in the first episode "Ghost", Echo provides one client with the perfect birthday weekend, and for another, helps him with his daughter's kidnapping.
