N.C. State to honor Corchiani, Gugliotta and '89 ACC title team

Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta will be back at the RBC Center on Tuesday as honored guests of N.C. State.

Wolfpack athletic director Debbie Yow said Sunday that the school will honor the 1988-89 N.C. State basketball team, which won the ACC regular-season title, before Tuesday's home game against North Carolina.

Corchiani and Gugliotta were both members of coach Jim Valvano's penultimate team, which went 10-4 in the ACC and advanced to the Round of 16 in the NCAA tournament. Both former players were involved in an incident with referee Karl Hess in N.C. State's 76-62 loss to Florida State on Saturday at the RBC Center.

Yow: Scheduling changes part of expansion reality

N.C. State and North Carolina have met twice a season on the basketball court every year since 1919. That's about to change.

The ACC announced its future scheduling plans for men's basketball and football on Friday and there will be more conference games in both sports, with the pending addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, but there will be fewer games between traditional ACC rivals.

Yow accuses Gary Williams of sabotage

Circle the next N.C. State-Maryland men's basketball game on the 2011-2012 ACC schedule.

When N.C. State introduced Debbie Yow as its new athletic director last year, the former Maryland AD downplayed rumors of a fractured relationship with Terrapins basketball coach Gary Williams, pointing out that she had nominated Williams for Hall of Fame consideration.

However, during this afternoon's news conference introducing the Wolfpack's new basketball coach, Mark Gottfried, Yow called out Williams for, in her words, trying to sabotage N.C. State's coach search.

Yow introduces N.C. State's new 'fearless' coach

RALEIGH – Minutes after being formally introduced today as N.C. State’s new coach, Mark Gottfried said he is ready to uphold the school’s tradition in basketball.

“This is a great place,” Gottfried said at this afternoon’s news conference. “You have great tradition here at North Carolina State. I’m very familiar with it, understand it, and I want, together with the fans, cherish it together.”

Gottfried, 47, coached Alabama for 11 seasons and was formally introduced as N.C. State’s basketball coach at a news conference in the Vaughn Towers suites at Carter-Finley Stadium.

Yow provides update on search in letter to Wolfpack Club

RALEIGH — With her list of potential candidates reduced by three, N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow reached out to Wolfpack fans on Monday night.

Yow sent an email out to Wolfpack Club members on Monday night which updated her efforts to find a new basketball coach, one that was a "fighter" and up to the challenge of rebuilding a program that is in "poor shape."

Yow will chair the committee.

Lowe and Yow to meet at noon today

Sidney Lowe and Debbie Yow are scheduled to meet at noon today to discuss Lowe's future as N.C. State's basketball coach.

NCSU's Woodson talks fundraising, budget, ice cream

Randy Woodson's been busy.

Since leaving Purdue University and becoming N.C. State's chancellor in April, he's barnstormed the state and beyond to introduce himself to alumni groups. He's slogged through his legislative season - where public universities lobby for funding - and he's made his first high-profile hire - new athletic director Debbie Yow.

On Tuesday, Woodson will be installed as NCSU's chancellor,  a formal ceremony highlighting a week of events. He spoke to the News & Observer about his early observations of the job. Here are excerpts:

What are your early impressions of the new job? Any surprises?

There haven't been a lot of surprises. The institution is so similar academically to where I came from, I feel the academic part hasn't been a surprise. The only surprises have been positive - the strength of our faculty and students. If there is a surprise, it's a positive one about how committed our alumni and fans are about the institution.

What's going to be the biggest budget fight in the legislative session?

A big one for us is to make sure that the tuition students pay stays on campus. The students are investing in their education. Where their tuition goes...needs to be transparent and clear. And always a big issue is making sure there's adequate funding for financial aid for students with the most significant financial need. It's going to be a difficult session all the way around. We understand that.

You mentioned fan interest, alumni interest. Did you get a good glimpse of that early on in hiring a new athletic director?

Tudor's Take: Pack's 4-0 start puts an end to O'Brien 'coach watch'

The Tom O’Brien job watch ended Saturday.

It’s not completely official yet, of course.

It’ll probably be a few more weeks before new N.C. State athletics director Debbie Yow rewards the fourth-year football coach with a job extension.

N.C. State's Yow to reorganize department

Athletic director Debbie Yow, who was hired in June to replace Lee Fowler, is planning to reorganize N.C. State's athletic department.

"We think we've got the right people on the bus," Yow said. "We want to make sure they're in the right seats."
