Giveaway: 'Artists Den' prize pack includes Death Cab for Cutie t-shirt

Good news. Season 4 of "Live from the Artists Den" begins tonight on UNC-TV. Well, actually it airs on Sunday morning at 1 a.m. (which is when all Season 4 episodes will air).

But either way, you're going to want to record it.

The first episode features an intimate concert by Adele. Other artists featured this season are Death Cab for Cutie, The Fray, Amos Lee (with Calexico), Kid Rock, and Iron and Wine.

The good people at Artists Den sent us a really cool prize pack to give to a lucky reader. The pack includes a Death Cab for Cutie t-shirt (size Large), a cd of "Arists Den vol. I" featuring Ed Harcourt, David Poe, Motel Bed and others, and a dvd of The Swell Season's performance on the show from 2008.

To win, send me an email with your mailing address by midnight on Wednesday, April 4, and we'll randomly select a winner.

Good luck!

Death Cab survives

The last time I interviewed anybody from Death Cab For Cutie was a conversation with guitarist Chris Walla several years back. Walla was established as the band's producer as well as guitarist, but he said he was ready to let go of producing the band's albums and let someone else do it. That was two albums ago, and yet Walla has still been listed as Death Cab's producer for each new record (including the new "Codes and Keys").

"We're all kind of self-producing in a way, since we're in band conversations all the time," drummer Jason McGerr said in a recent interview. "Having one more producer in the studio could be detrimental, and finding a producer who wouldn't be a lateral move would be a huge endeavor. We'd have to audition people, record songles to find the right guy. That's not to say we won't, someday. But if it's not broke, don't fix it."

For more, including details on the band's upcoming performance and some talk about their recent brush with death, see the preview interview in Friday's paper.

Death Cab For Cary

When we ran the outdoor music guide a few weeks back, the popular college-radio band Death Cab For Cutie was one of the acts being mentioned as a possibility for the Downtown Raleigh Amphitheater. Death Cab is indeed headed our way -- but to Cary rather than Raleigh. The group will play Booth Amphitheatre on Aug. 8. Tickets are $32-$37 and go on sale May 6 at the usual spots.
