Dawkins, Blue Devils cruise to 91-73 win over Wake Forest

Updated 10:42 p.m.

DURHAM – From Ryan Kelly’s free throws against Georgia Tech to the frantic end-of-game sequence against Virginia to Andre Dawkins’ jumpers against Clemson, just about every play meant something in Duke’s previous ACC games.

That wasn’t the case in the Blue Devils’ 91-73 win over Wake Forest on Thursday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Using strong outings by Dawkins and Austin Rivers as springboards, the fourth-ranked Blue Devils (16-2, 4-0) walloped the Demon Deacons, building a commanding 20-point lead early in the second half to cruise to their most lopsided victory in three weeks.

Wake Forest's season ends with 81-67 loss to BC

GREENSBORO -- Wake Forest’s forgettable basketball season came to its expected conclusion today when the Deacons were eliminated from the ACC tournament by an 81-67 loss to Boston College at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The defeat ended the Deacons’ poorest season in ACC play, leaving them with an 8-24 record and just one victory in 17 league games (including the tournament).

Duke women advance with 79-50 trouncing of Deacons

GREENSBORO -- Duke senior Jasmine Thomas drained a 3-pointer midway through the first half on Friday and dropped to the floor grabbing her left knee.

Her shot through the net, the top-seeded Blue Devils were surging over Wake Forest in their opening game of the ACC women’s basketball tournament. Thomas, near tears, limped off the court and headed to the locker room.

By the time the team’s leading scorer returned, her knee wrapped in tape, the Devils (27-3) had pulled ahead on a 13-0 run and were well on their way to a business-as-usual 79-50 victory over the Demon Deacons (15-17) at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Kelly shines in Duke's 83-59 dismantling of Wake

WINSTON-SALEM - Kyle Singler said Duke teammate Ryan Kelly played nearly a perfect game.

The numbers from the fourth-ranked Blue Devils’ 83-59 defeat of Wake Forest on Saturday bear that out.

Although the inspired Deacons seriously challenged Duke into the second half at the Joel Coliseum, Kelly’s efficient performance helped put the Blue Devils over the top.

Kelly made all six of his field goal attempts – including four 3-pointers – to score 20 points, exceeding his career high by seven points. After going 4-for-4 from the field with 11 points and eight rebounds in a win Wednesday night at N.C. State, Kelly is the hottest player on Duke’s team.

Wilson leads Pack to 38-3 win over Wake

RALEIGH - If Saturday was Russell Wilson’s last home game as N.C. State’s quarterback, he left Carter-Finley Stadium in style.

Wilson, a junior, was honored on senior day because he hasn’t announced whether he is returning for his senior season. Then he passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more in N.C. State’s 38-3 dismantling of Wake Forest.

ACC Women's soccer: Wake Forest defeats North Carolina in shootout

CARY – Entering this week’s ACC women’s soccer tournament, North Carolina had made every final since the league started the event in 1988.

Not this time.

It took a gutsy 1-1 (5-4) shootout victory by Wake Forest at WakeMed Stadium on Friday to snap that 22-year streak.

Ga. Tech escapes with 24-20 win over Wake Forest

Georgia Tech rallied from behind twice in the fourth quarter Saturday night to escape with a 24-20 victory over Wake Forest at BB&T Field.

Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Correy Earls with 15 seconds remaining to cap the Yellow Jackets’ comeback victory.

Wake Forest 53, Presbyterian 13

It will get more challenging from here for Wake Forest but the Deacons’ season-opening 53-13 victory over Presbyterian Thursday night at BB&T Field provided an encouraging start for the redesigned Deacons.
