David Klein's "If 6 Was 9": When numbers get serious

You might think you have an obsessive streak. But trust me, compared to David Klein, you don't. For the past few years, Klein has been on a quest to come up with the definitive countdown of the greatest number songs of all time. Initially, it was him holding forth from a barstool. Then Klein started a blog, and now there's a book -- "If 6 Was 9 And Other Assorted Number Songs" (7/21 Books), which covers songs from one on up to 33.

Klein will talk about that and also volume number two (which will cover 34 to 99) at a reading Thursday night in Durham. For details on that plus lots of numerical chit-chat, see the interview in Sunday's paper.

Prime numbers from David Klein

Maybe you've got an oddball obsession in your life that takes up way too much time. Chances are, it's nowhere near as esoteric as that of David Klein, a writer from Chapel Hill. Klein writes a regular column on rock-music numerology -- "a series of 100 essays, each one focusing on the songs and song types associated with a given number and ultimately declaring one song definitive." Check out his latest, on the number 59.
