DWTS: Rock 'n roll doesn't always work in the ballroom

"Dancing with the Stars" correspondent Lenni G fills us in on last night's dances:

It's Rock 'n Roll week so we must have an appearance from KISS. The outrageous makeup and outfits were cool when these guys were young. Now that they're all "geriatricly challenged," it's just plain weird. Actually, in my opinion, most of last night was strange. I'm just not sure that the rock music was totally complementary to the ballroom dancing.  But enough about me ...

Sherri and Val (right) started the evening with a tango. Len thought she did a great job overall. Bruno said she played it well and liked her "nasty." Carrie felt it was "good" but lacked "sparkle."   was a bit put off by Sherri's facial expressions which looked more like pain than passion. Judges' scores - 7's from all three for a total of 21.

DWTS: A dancer is dismissed and new rules are revealed for future eliminations

"Dancing with the Stars" blogger Lenni G tells us about last night's elimination:

As usual, results night was crammed with all sorts of entertainment - Seal, Rascal Flatts, Macy's Stars of Dance featuring Travis Wall and tWITCH, as well as a haunting tribute dance from Anna and her husband, Jonathan Rogers, in honor of their friend and fellow dancer, Julia Ivlena, who is suffering from stage 4 cancer.

Not as usual, Tom Bergeron announced a startling change to the elimination process. Starting next week, and continuing for the three weeks after that, there will be a "dance off" between the bottom two couples after which the judges will determine who leaves the competition. I'm thinking the show's producers have decided that some of the viewer vote has not always been about dancing skills and, for that reason, some of the better stars have gone away too early. So, for at least four weeks, the judges will have the final say on who stays and who goes. Interesting, very interesting. On to last night's results which were determined solely by the voting public...

DWTS: A tearjerker night with high-scoring dances

Our "Dancing with the Stars" correspondent Lenni G has some thoughts on last night's episode.

To quote Judge Len, last evening's performances were "awesome." Lowest score of the night - 24. Yes, people, I said 24! And we had the first tens of the season! The dancing was all about the stars most memorable year so you know knew from the start it was going to be a multiple tissue event.

First up, Jack and Anna with a samba celebrating Jack's daughter "finding" him in 2011. Len liked Jack's rhythm and felt it was the best dance from him so far. Bruno said he really "got the party started." Carrie Ann felt he "uplifted the room" but wanted to see more. I'm still not into Jack though it was a nice story. Judges' scores - 8's from all three for a total of 24.

DWTS results: Game, set, match

Our "Dancing With The Stars" correspondent Lennie G puts things in perspective:

The best part of last night's results show was the pairing of Matt Nathanson with the incredible Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland fame.  The song they did was great and the dancing from Peta and Tristan was just plain WOW.

As for the results, the three couples in danger ended up being Martina and Tony, Roshon and Chelsie, and Gavin and Karina.  Roshon in danger and not Jack!  Oh my.  After Roshon and Gavin were sent to safety, Martina became this season's first eliminated star.  I guess women tennis players just don't get the dancing thing - remember the Monica Seles disaster?  I'm wondering if Chris Evert, who was in the audience the first night, might be the one to reverse this trend.

Next week we're back to Latin dances when, hopefully, the competition will rise to the level of the first night.  Yes William, I'll be watching you!

"Dancing with the Stars" recap: Most of the stars fall back down to Earth

Our "DWTS" correspondent Lennie G weighs in on last night's happenings:

Proving once again that practice makes (near) perfect, as in having a few weeks to prepare for the first week's dances, and that Latin dances may be easier to do than ballroom routines, the "Stars," with two notable exceptions, really seemed to struggle last night.

Notable Exception #1 - Roshon and Chelsie starting the evening with a quick step.  Len liked it, calling it young and fresh.  Bruno loved Roshon's "cheeky swagger."  Carrie Ann called Roshon her "new prince."  Nice Roshon, very nice.  Judges' scores - 9's from Carrie Ann and Bruno, 8 from Len for a total of 26 and a grand total of 49 for the two nights.

Next up, Sherri and Val with a real "spicy" jive.  Bruno told Sherri she certainly knows how to work "her magnificent equipment."  Carrie Ann was in love with Sherri's confidence.  Len, in a rare joyful moment, said it was obvious that she felt good, the audience felt good and he felt good.  I'm with Len - Sherri is fun, fun, fun.  Judges' scores - 8's from Carrie Ann and Bruno, 7 from Len for a total of 23 and a grand total of 46.  Note to Len - Fun dancer should have received an 8 from you.

DWTS: Some March Madness on the dance floor

Our "Dancing with the Stars" guest blogger Lenni G is back on duty this season, and she loved last night's premiere. Here's her recap:

Proving that "March Madness" can be more than the NCAA basketball tournament, last night's start to Season 14 was a total SLAM DUNK. Have to say this was the best first show EVER!  Not a single Star got less than 20 from the judges!!

Here are the details:

Maria Menounos and Derek Hough went first with a cha cha.  Len thought Maria "coped very well" but felt she needed "meaner hips." Bruno found her "delicious," but felt she needed to be a bit more "sultry."  Carrie Ann felt she did a great job but needed to work on her movement between the various parts of the dance.  Thank goodness her dancing is better than her laugh which is just awful.  Judges' scores - 7's from all three for a total of 21.

Jack Warner and Anna Trebunskaya followed with a fox trot.  Bruno said it was "well acted and danced."  Carrie Ann said it took her to "a happy place."  Len said it had the "feel good factor" but felt Jack's technique was poor.  Not sure Jack had all the personality I like from a star though his dancing was pretty OK.  Judges' scores - 8's from Carrie Ann and Bruno, 7 from Len for a total of 23.

What to Watch on Monday: 'Dancing with the Stars' begins, Ed Asner on 'Hawaii 5-O'

Dancing with the Stars (8pm, ABC) - The 14th season begins with 12 couples dancing either the fox-trot or the cha-cha. Gladys Knight, Melissa Gilbert, and Martina Navratilova are among the dancers, but here is the full list of this season's competitors. Click below to see a photo of the full cast.

Half Pint, Urkel and Gladys Knight on 'Dancing with the Stars'

The  new "Dancing with the Stars" cast was announced today and the lineup includes two former child actors and no reality stars! Regardless of the overall celebrity quotient, I call this an improvement.

Here's the list of dancers and their partners:

Melissa Gilbert: actress who played Laura Ingalls (aka Half Pint, pictured here with Jack the dog) on "Little House on the Prairie"; former SAG president -- partner: Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Jaleel White: actor who played Urkel on "Family Matters" -- partner: Kym Johnson

Gladys Knight: singer, eight-time Grammy winner -- partner: Tristan McManus

Sherri Shepherd: co-host on "The View" and actress on "30 Rock" -- partner: Val Chmerkovskiy

Martina Navratilova: professional tennis legend -- partner: Tony Dovolani

'Dancing with the Stars': A recap and some final thoughts

Here's a final word on this season of "Dancing with the Stars" from our correspondent, Lenni G, who is overjoyed with J.R.'s big win:

A thoroughly jampacked episode last night with Lady Antebellum for entertainment, performances from the nine stars who had been eliminated in previous weeks, and more dancing from the three finalists.

During the first hour of the show, Ricki and Derek, Rob and Cheryl, and J.R. and Karina each chose a dance they had done before and did it again.  Ricki chose her fantastic "Psycho" tango because it was just so fantastic we had to see it one more time.  Rob chose his dreamy "Fly Me to the Moon" foxtrot which he had dedicated to his father.  J.R. decided to show Len that the jive Len had called a lindy hop was really a jive.  Coming in first were Ricki and Derek with 30 points.  Second place went to J.R. and Karina with 28 points, leaving third place to Rob and Cheryl with 26.

At the end of the first hour, Ricki and Derek became the first finalists to be eliminated.  As I said yesterday, Ricki just didn't finish this competition very well, though the rest of her season was truly excellent.
