The Original Q Shack donates today's proceeds in honor of Newtown victims

Durham restaurateur Dan Ferguson is donating 100 percent of the proceeds from today's sales at The Original Q Shack to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Ferguson said in a press release that he was inspired to do the fundraiser after the Dec. 14 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., that left 26 adults and children dead. NAMI has an office in Durham.

"My youngest son is 6 and a half and in first grade...He could have been one of those babies our country lost last week," Ferguson said in a statement. Ferguson said that he believes the perpetrator was in need of mental health care, adding: "Like our whole community, I felt so helpless watching the news. I wanted to do something to try and help."

The Original Q Shack should not to be confused with other restaurants in the area bearing a similar name and with which Ferguson used to be associated. Ferguson's restaurant is at 2510 University Drive. The restaurant will offer a limited menu from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today.
