CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina has utilized a kind of co-defensive coordinator approach with Dan Disch and Vic Koenning, both of whom have similar titles and similar roles in leading the Tar Heels defense.

Disch is technically the team’s defensive coordinator. And Koenning is the associate head coach for defense.

So who’s going to be calling the defensive plays for the Heels?

Marquis Haynes gives UNC 16th football commitment

North Carolina on Sunday received a commitment from Marquis Haynes, a 6-2, 220-pound defensive end from the University Christian School in Jacksonville, Fla. Haynes had been committed to Louisville but, reached by phone on Sunday, said he “felt happy and felt at home” at UNC.

Haynes recently attended a camp at UNC, and he said he has developed a close relationship with Dan Disch, the Tar Heels’ defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator. Disch has ties to Jacksonville, having spent 22 years coaching high school football in the area.

The University of North Carolina will pay its football coaching staff $4.07 million during its first year on the job, according to figures the university released on Monday. That includes the $2.13 million UNC will pay to head coach Larry Fedora, whom the university introduced in December as the successor to interim head coach Everett Withers.

Fedora’s salary includes a one-time payment of $400,000, which the university was to provide to him by March 15, according to his contract. Blake Anderson, Dan Disch and Vic Koenning are UNC’s three highest-paid assistants. They will each receive $250,000 annually.
