What to Watch on Wednesday: Dogs, 'Damages' and ESPY Awards

Dogs in the City (8pm, CBS) - Justin partners with Edie Falco to renovate an animal shelter. He also works with an aggressive dog that was once attacked, and an anxious dog that loses its cool during playtime.

ESPY Awards (9pm, ESPN) - Comedian Rob Riggle hosts the event from Los Angeles. Longtime Tennessee women's basketball coach Pat Summitt receives the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Damages (9pm, DirecTV 239) - Season five has some great guest stars -- Ryan Phillippe, Jenna Elfman -- in addition to series regulars Glenn Close and Rose Byrne. But remember, it's only on DirecTV. The new season has a Wikileaks theme: the founder of a controversial website devoted to government and corporate transparency gets sued after his most recent information leak does not go as planned. This leads to a legal showdown between Patty and Ellen.

Beverly Hills Nannies (9pm, ABC Family) - The premiere of a new reality series centered on the caregivers who work for wealthy families in Beverly Hills.

Dallas (9pm, TNT) - A frustrated John Ross moves into Southfork. Meanwhile, Bobby is displeased to learn that Ann sought help from her ex.

Haunted Collector (9pm, Syfy) - A woman's Kentucky home and silo in Ohio are visited in the Season 2 premiere.

Picked Off (10pm, History) - The premiere of a new series that features teams competing to collect valuable items with only $100 to spend. A flea market and a warehouse in Louisiana are visited in the opener.

Hit & Miss (10pm, DirecTV 239) - Chloe Sevigny ("Big Love") plays a transgendered assassin in this new British drama series available only on DirecTV.

Today's giveaway has legal ramifications

But if you've got Patty Hewes as your litigator, you should be fine.

That's Glenn Close's character on the rightfully acclaimed series "Damages," and we've got the complete third season DVD. There are 13 episodes on 3 discs. Special features include cast and crew commentaries, deleted scenes, episode introductions and a blooper reel.

This third season is the one before the show moved to Direct TV, and features Lily Tomlin, Campbell Scott, and Martin Short. You'll get to see Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan and Ted Danson too.

And it's so easy to snag. Just send an email by 8 p.m. today (12/12). We'll have a random drawing. We'll send it to that person. They'll get good TV. It's what we do.

DirecTV launches weekly "Damages" sweepstakes

DirecTV is hosting a weekly "Damages" watch and win sweepstakes and giving away some pretty cool prizes like Sony laptops and $500 Brooks Brothers gift cards.

The "Justice is Served" sweepstakes starts at the DirecTV Facebook page, where you'll need to Like them to play. Once you're on the page (you may need to select "Damages New Season" on the left side of the page to get off their main wall), you select the prize you want to play for and you'll get a question to answer and an entry form.

You can play every week.

"Damages" (which is great, by the way) airs exclusively on DirecTV (239) on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m.  It stars Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, and John Goodman.

Giveaway: "Damages" Season 3 on DVD

The fourth season of "Damages" premieres tonight on DirecTV (the show previously aired on FX). To celebrate the return of one of our favorite shows, we're giving away a DVD set of "Damages" Season 3, which just went on sale yesterday.

Season 3 borrowed from the Bernie Madoff scandal and featured amazing performances from guest stars Lily Tomlin, Martin Short, and Campbell Scott (as well as "Damages" regulars Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Ted Danson, and Tate Donovan).

To win, send me an email with your name and mailing address. I'll draw a winner randomly from those entries. I'll take entries until midnight this Sunday (July 17).

If you don't win, the gorgeous Sony Home Pictures Entertainment set lists for $39.99, but you can usually get it a little cheaper than that (Amazon has it for $19.99 right now).

WINNER! Congratulations to Justin from Greenville!

Ted Danson the new star of "CSI"

The big news: Ted Danson is heading to "CSI."

The big question: Is this something that could finally get me to try to watch at least one full episode of "CSI?"

Danson is best known for his comic portayal of Sam Malone on the long-running NBC sitcom "Cheers," and then spent six years heading the CBS sitcom "Becker." But Danson can definitely do drama, as fans of "Damages" can attest (Danson was nominated for an Emmy for playing the rotten CEO, Arthur Furbisher). Danson also currently stars on the HBO series "Bored to Death," and he's absolutely hilarious there, and makes occasional appearances on Larry David's "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

What to Watch on Wednesday: "Rescue Me" and "Damages" lead tonight's premieres

ESPY Awards (9pm, ESPN) - Seth Meyers hosts the 19th annual ESPY Awards, honoring top sports performers and performances. Dewey Bozella, a boxer who was imprisoned and served 26 years for a murder he didn't commit, will receive the 2011 Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Roseanne's Nuts (9pm, Lifetime) - The premiere of a new reality show following sitcom star Roseanne Barr as she attempts to manage a 40-acre macadamia nut and livestock farm in Hawaii with her boyfriend and son. Back-to-back episodes tonight. Here's Adrienne's review.

Ghost Hunters International (9pm, Syfy) - In the Season 3 premiere, the team goes to Trinidad to probe claims concerning the ghost of a cocoa plantation owner.

Rescue Me (10pm, FX) - The seventh and final season of this FX drama begins with Tommy's family life being shaken up by Sheila and the pregnant Janet, who are now best friends. Meanwhile, Black Shawn wants to take his relationship with Colleen to the next level, Mickey and Teddy go into business together, and Damien is still benched in the wake of his on-the-job accident.

Damages (10pm, DirecTV 239) - Season four of this excellent Glenn Close drama jumps from FX to DirecTV and features a storyline centering on a lawsuit against a Blackwater-type military security firm. If you have DirecTV, I'm jealous. Here's my review of the new season.

The Franchise: A Season with the San Francisco Giants (10pm, Showtime) - This new series follows the World Champion San Francisco Giants as they attempt to defend their World Series title. Tonight's first episode looks at how an injury to Brian Zito allowed for Ryan Vogelsong to return to the majors for his best season yet, and what the team will do when Zito returns from the disabled list (check out this clip from the show on Zito's possible return).

Necessary Roughness (10pm, USA) - A NASCAR driver needs help getting back behind the wheel after a crash. Also, TK clashes with a rookie wide receiver, and Lindsay and R.J. lose control of a party they're throwing.

Legend Quest (10pm, Syfy) - A new series following a symbologist on a trek to find historical artifacts. Tonight's episode centers on a search for the Ark of the Covenant in Italy, France, and Ethiopia, and also, a search for Mexico's Talking Cross.

Dance Moms (10pm, Lifetime) - A new reality series following Pittsburgh competitive dance instructor Abby Lee Miller, her young students, and their pushy moms.

Season 4 of "Damages" debuts on DirecTV

Much as it did a few years ago with NBC's neglected jewel "Friday Night Lights," DirecTV rescued FX's superb drama "Damages" from the scrap heap last year, promising the show's fans two more seasons of Patty Hewes' mind-bending machinations.

The fourth season of that acclaimed Glenn Close series -- its first on DirecTV -- premieres tomorrow night at 10pm.

Season 4's legal plot involves a lawsuit against a powerful military security contractor, à la Blackwater, with John Goodman playing the Erik Prince role (in a fairly obvious nod, Goodman's character is named Howard Erickson). Chris Messina ("Julie and Julia") plays an Iraq war vet who took a job in Afghanistan with Erickson's High Star Security Corporation. He just happens to be an old high school friend of Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), who is trying to bring about the lawsuit on behalf of families of those killed during questionable High Star missions.

Have DirecTV? Then do some Damage.

If you subscribe to DirecTV, you're in for a real treat.

Starting tonight at 10pm, the carrier will begin showing episodes of the critically acclaimed FX drama, "Damages." They will start with the first episode of Season 1 and show a new episode each Wednesday night at 10pm, leading up to the premiere of Season 4 this summer.

Season 4 of "Damages" will be available exclusively on DirecTV.

"Damages" stars Glenn Close, Ted Danson, and Rose Byrne. It originated on FX but the ratings for Season 3 weren't fantastic, so the series was canceled and DirecTV picked it up. Unlike DirecTV's deal with "Friday Night Lights," in which that show is broadcast first on DirecTV and later on NBC, "Damages" will not be shown later on FX. If you don't have DirecTV and want to see the final season, you'll have to wait for the dvds. I know. Bummer.

I highly recommend DirecTV customers tune in tonight. It airs on Channel 101.

What to Watch on Monday: A sitcom debut and the "Damages" finale

Earth Days (9pm, UNC-TV) - A documentary tracking the modern environmental movement, beginning with the first Earth Day in 1970. Among the featured are biologist Paul Ehrlich ("Population Bomb") and former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall.

Trauma (9pm, NBC) - No one appreciates (or watches) this show, but I really like it. Tonight, Tyler's father comes to town for a visit and Glenn mines the crew for stories as he does research for his book. More Rabbit!!!

Romantically Challenged (9:30pm, ABC) - Following "Dancing with the Stars" (which is only 90 minutes tonight) is the debut of this new sitcom starring Alyssa Milano (right) as a lawyer and mother who struggles with the dating scene after the end of a 15-year marriage. If you can buy the premise that Alyssa Milano struggles with dating, then you're obviously a science fiction fan and probably not that into sitcoms anyway. Update: ABC has suddenly changed their game plan tonight and are not airing the first episode (which critics saw and pretty much hated). Instead, they are opening with a later episode. Not a good sign!

Damages (10pm, FX) - In a 90-minute season (please, just season, not series!) finale, we see how all that crazy mess involving the Tobins has really gone down. Who was beating on Tom in that seedy apartment? Why did he jump off that bridge? Will Leonard/Lester really turn on the Tobins? Why is Patty being haunted by a horse? This is going to be a good one. Things don't look great for the renewal of this fine show, so tonight could be our last frenetic dance with Patty Hewes...

What to Watch Monday: A mummy's curse and NCAA champs

Chuck (8pm, NBC) - The spies regroup after learning it was a villainous operative responsible for the death of Shaw's wife, not Sarah. They set out to find the evildoer, but Chuck worries over Shaw's mental state.

Life Unexpected (8pm, The CW) - Cate, Baze, and Lux go on a road trip to track down Cate's long lost father (Peter Horton).

NCAA Basketball Championship (9pm, CBS) - It's the championship game between our hometown ACC champs Duke and the home court-advantaged Butler bulldogs. Can Duke do it?!

Castle (10pm, ABC) - While investigating the death of a museum curator believed to have been the victim of a mummy's curse, Castle (Nathan Fillion, left) channels Indiana Jones and peeks at forbidden artifacts, then worries he too will fall prey to the curse.

Damages (10pm, FX) - Patty's star witness (Tobin's illegitimate daughter) is arrested, forcing Patty to make an unusual deal with the DA or else be removed as the lawyer for Tobin's victims. Also, Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) shoots his mouth off and reveals a little too much about his past.

Nurse Jackie (10pm, Showtime) - Dr. Cooper is named one of the Top 25 doctors in New York City by New York magazine, and Grace's obnoxious friend walks in on Jackie snorting drugs.
