Stars 2, Canes 1 (SO)

DALLAS — After the Dallas Stars failed to capitalize on a half dozen scoring chances in overtime, center Brad Richards got the only penalty shot for a 2-1 shootout win at American Airlines Center Friday.

Carolina goalie Cam Ward was more than solid in the overtime period but the Hurricanes couldn't get much going until an odd-man rush gave Hurricanes defenseman Joe Corvo a good look.

But he fired into the glove of a diving Dallas goalie Andrew Raycroft, in for the injured Kari Lehtonen.

Richards was the only player successful in penalty shots.

Jokinen learned much from 'mentor' Lehtinen

DALLAS — Carolina Hurricanes forward Jussi Jokinen always looked up to countryman Dallas Stars Jere Lehtinen, who announced his retirement from hockey Wednesday.

Jokinen said he learned a lot from Lehtinen when the two were teammates in Dallas from 2005 to 2008.

Both are from Finland.

"One of the best things that happened to me when I came to this league was being his roommate my first year," Jokinen said after Friday's morning practice at American Airlines Center, where the Hurricanes will play the Stars tonight at 8:30 p.m.

Canes aim to stop Stars' top line

DALLAS — The Carolina Hurricanes were playing their third game in four nights when they hosted the Dallas Stars on Nov. 29.

The Stars swept through town with their fourth-straight win in a streak that ended at six. Dallas heads into tonight's rematch (8:30 p.m., FSCR) with a two-game losing streak after losing 5-3 to the Blackhawks in Chicago Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have had five days of rest to remember for a pair of back-to-back road games.

"We tried to take full advantage of it," Canes coach Paul Maurice said.

Stars 3, Hurricanes 2

DALLAS (AP) — Steve Begin and Brendan Morrison scored their first goals for Dallas, and the Stars ended a six-game home losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.

Begin had gone seven games without a goal since he was acquired in a trade with Montreal on Feb. 26, while Morrison hadn't scored in four games after being picked up off waivers from Anaheim on March 4.

Mike Ribeiro, Begin and Morrison scored during the first 9:51 of the second period after Rod Brind'Amour's short-handed tally put the Hurricanes in front in the first.
