Clemson's 6-3 win knocks Pack out of ACC tourney

DURHAM -- N.C. State came to Durham Bulls Athletic Park today needing a victory over Clemson to play for the ACC baseball championship.

Maybe next year.

Richie Shaffer's two-out, three-run homer in the sixth helped propel the sixth-seeded Tigers to a 6-3 victory over the seventh-seeded Pack in the ACC tournament.

Kia drivers are in at the DBAP

At the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Saturn drivers are out and Kia drivers are in.

Saturn dealerships are shutting down in advance of the October deadline imposed by General Motors for the end of the Saturn brand. As a result, the Bulls needed to find a new parking sponsor for the 2010 season and found it in Univesity Kia.

The team will provide a reserved parking area for Kia drivers. People driving Kia vehicles to Durham Bulls games will also receive free parking in all premium parking areas, including parking decks and surface lots.

And, even if you don't drive a Kia, University Kia is offering a free parking pass for an upcoming game to the first 100 people to visit its Web site.

July 28, 2009: Nelson, Mellencamp perform at DBAP

Coming our way: Bob Dylan, et al

Here's a show I wish I'd known about early enough to include in last week's outdoor music guide: Bob Dylan on another of his baseball-park tours, July 28 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park with fellow travelers John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson. Dylan and Nelson, you might recall, played a few years back at the Carolina Mudcats ballpark in Zebulon.

All tickets are general admission and priced at $67.50. They go on sale May 9. For details, check here.

World Beer, Bull Durham Blues festivals to be held at DBAP

Two signature Durham events, the World Beer Festival and the Bull Durham Blues Festival, will be held this year at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park instead of the Durham Athletic Park, which is about to undergo major renovations.

The Bull Durham Blues Festival is slated for Sept. 18-20, and the World Beer Festival will take place Oct. 4.

The $6.3 million renovation to the DAP, the former home of the Durham Bulls, will begin in late July. The park should be ready for use as a training facility for Minor League Baseball by early next year, said Alan Delisle, the city's economic development director.

Daniel Bradford, organizer of the World Beer Festival, said he's thrilled about the opportunity to host the 12th annual event at what he described as a "spectacular facility."

Bradford said officials are taking pains to tread lightly on the DBAP's pristine field. In 2005, the DAP field suffered extensive damage after the World Beer Festival was held after heavy rains.

A field protectant called Terraplas is being used to avoid a repeat.

Delisle said the plan is for the World Beer and Bull Durham Blues festivals to move back to the DAP next year.

But Bradford's hoping the World Beer Festival won't be forced back.

"It’d be wonderful if we had a choice," he said.

Things that go boom in the night

If you're planning to take in Durham's free fireworks at the DBAP tomorrow (Friday) night, be aware:
— Pyrotechnicians will be shooting off from down on the baseball field, thus limiting the view from outside the ballpark;
— To see what goes on beforehand (Kevin Costner rocking out, city officials talking on ... ) you have to buy a ticket;
— To get a good view of the free show for free you have to wait until the gates open, about 9:30;
— If you can't get a seat, you can watch from Blackwell Street outside the third-base corner.
