Reminder: Taste of the Triangle cooking classes

REMINDER: A Southern Season runs a series of cooking classes featuring local chefs. So if you want to learn how to cook the food served at your favorite local restaurants, here are a few upcoming classes:

  • Chef Masa Tsujimura of Raleigh's Waraji will be teaching a sushi class at 2 p.m. Jan. 16. The class costs $50.
  • Chefs Alex Gallis of Cypress on the Hill in Chapel Hill and Chef Jeremy Blankenship of Tyler's Taproom in Carrboro are teaching together at 6 p.m. Jan. 31. The class costs $40.
  • Chef Mel Melton of Papa Mojo's Roadhouse in Durham will cook as well as perform with his band, The Wicked Mojos. That class will be 2 p.m. Feb. 27. It costs $45.
  • Jamil Kadoura, the gracious owner of Chapel Hill's Mediterranean Deli, will be there at  6 p.m. Mar. 8. The class costs $30.
  • Justin Cole, the young new executive chef at La Residence in Chapel Hill, will be teaching at 6 p.m. March 14. The class costs $40.

Looking for New Year's Eve reservations?

So many dining options, how can you choose?

I had an earlier post about the special menus at Marguax's, Savoy, Piedmont, Jujube and Zely & Ritz. Here are a few more:

  • Chapel Hill's Cypress on the Hill  is offering a five-course meal for $65 with wine pairings for an additional $20. To see the menu, go HERE. Call 537-8817 for a reservation. Earlier time slots are filling up but if you want a later reservation, this may be a good option for your party.
  • Chapel Hill's Lantern is serving a three-course menu for $75. To see the menu, go HERE. Call 969-8846 for a reservation.
  • Raleigh's Solas is offering two seatings. One from 5-7 p.m. and another from 7-9 p.m. Click HERE for details. (I can't tell if it costs $40, $60 or $55. The facebook page isn't clear to me.) If you don't want to do dinner, it looks like you can pay a $20 cover for access to the bars, deejays and more. Call 755-0755 for a reservation.
  • Cary's The Umstead Hotel is hosting a New Year's Eve gala for $125. It  includes beverages, hors d'oeuvres and live music. Call 447-4000 for tickets.
  • ADDED: Blu Seafood and Bar in Durham is offering four courses for $60. Go HERE to see the menu.
     

Cypress on the Hill offers Foothills beer dinner

Chapel Hill’s Cypress on the Hill is hosting a five-course beer dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8 featuring brews from Foothills Brewing Co.

The menu  includes boudin blanc, akak white pork sausage, with beer-braised purple cabbage, roasted apples and creamy Dijon mustard sauce paired with India Style brown ale. The dinner costs $40.

Cypress on the Hill wine dinner Thursday night

Just a few spaces left for the wine dinner at Chapel Hill's Cypress on the Hill Thursday night. You get five courses featuring wines from Melissa Kelly Winery for $100.

Among the courses barbecue Carolina white shrimp with three pepper vinaigrette slaw and Texas Pete , Brinkley Farms twice-baked grits souffl√© with wild mushroom ragout, and shaved confit foie gras,  and house-made pork rillettes with crostini, pickles and mustard.

Cypress on the Hill wine dinner Nov. 3

Cypress on the Hill is hosting a wine dinner featuring pinot noirs from Sokol Blosser vineyards in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The event is at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3

The meal includes four courses plus dessert. The wines will include the 2004 Estate Pinot, 2004 Goose Pen Pinot, 2005 Dundee Pinot and 2000 Willamette Valley pinot.

The cost is $75 per person. Please call 919-537-8817 for reservations.

If you didn't know, Alex Gallis is the chef at Cypress on the Hill. He worked for Ben Barker at Magnolia Grill for years.
