More than 300 to lose jobs in Pender County

A cosmetics maker in Pender County is laying off 330 people, according to a mass layoff notice filed with the N.C. Department of Commerce.

New York-based Coty Inc. is shutting down its manufacturing facility in Rocky Point, about 115 miles south of Raleigh. All the jobs will be eliminated by Aug. 31.

A third of the positions to be cut will be machine operators, assemblers, manufacturing leaders and mechanics.

Some of those jobs could be transferred to a the company's plant in Sanford, Coty officials said. Coty's Sanford plant, which currently employs about 800, is undergoing a $12 million expansion and will add 140 positions.

The Rocky Point plant makes nail polish, nail polish remover and hair remover. Coty's line of beauty products includes Calvin Klein, ChloƩ, Jennifer Lopez, JOOP!, Sarah Jessica Parker and Vera Wang.

Coty bought the Rocky Point facility from Del Laboratories in 2007. Coty officials had been considering the plant's closure since at least last year, according to local news reports. In December, 110 lost their jobs when Coty closed its distribution center in Rocky Point.

Coty to expand beauty products factory in Sanford, add 140 jobs

A beauty products company is planning a $12 million expansion at its Sanford manufacturing operations and expects to add 140 jobs by early next year.

Coty Inc. already makes lotions and fragrances at its Sanford facility, which opened in 1971 and employs about 800 people. The expansion will add production lines to make nail polishes. Production is scheduled to begin in March.

City and Lee County officials provided incentives worth about $280,000 to attract the jobs, which will pay an average of about $38,000 a year, said Bob Heuts, economic development director for Lee County.

"We did provide some incentives to make sure that project ended up here and not somewhere else," Heuts said. "Obviously, a manufacturer like that has many options around the world."
