Smithfield-Selma hosting SSS Invitational cross country event on Saturday

Smithfield-Selma will help get the area cross country season rolling Saturday morning with the SSS Invitational at Smithfield Community Park. The races begin at 8 a.m. Scheduled to compete are the host Spartans, along with Clayton, South Johnston, West Johnston, Nash Central, Wilson Fike, Red Springs and first-year schools Cleveland and Corinth Holders.

West Johnston's boys team finished third in the state 4-A championships last fall and is projected to be among the state title contenders again this year.

Corinth Holders wins first boys soccer match

Corinth Holders High School's boys soccer team picked up the first win in school history on Wednesday, downing Goldsboro, 5-2.

Kevin Roasles pulled the Pirates even at 1 in the first half, then Corinth Holders scored the game's next four goals. Marcos Mejia, Melecio Rubio, Alex Dimmock and Dom Eannarino all scored in the second half.

The Pirates outshot the Cougars 21-5 on the night.

Corinth Holders names coaches

New Corinth Holders High in Johnston County has named most of its coaches.

Johnston County Schools names football coaches for new schools

I report on the pending hires of Marc Morris and Barry Honeycutt as the head coaches for Johnston County's new high schools in today's News & Observer. Morris will start the program at Cleveland High School, while Honeycutt gets things going at Corinth Holders.

Both schools will play only junior varsity schedules this fall and start varsity football play in the fall of 2011. You can read the entire report here:

Corinth Holders High to name football coach on May 1

Acting Corinth Holders High School athletic director Brent Walston said Wednesday that the school plans to announce its first football coach on May 1. The new Johnston County High School will open in the fall, playing a junior varsity schedule for a season before starting a full varsity program in the 2011-12 season.
