Durham library site gets a makeover

As I logged on to check the status of my overdue fines at the Durham library (I'm a bad citizen, I know) I realized that I forgot to blog about the library's new Web site and content, plus the recommendations they're offering to avid readers.

"We’ve got lots of new content. Our children and teen pages have been completely redesigned, and we’ve enhanced our Spanish-language pages," Director Skip Auld said in a news release last week.

The new site also features NextReads, an electronic newsletter subscription service that provides reading suggestions for adults and children in more than 20 categories, including fiction and nonfiction, on a monthly or bimonthly basis.

Neighborhood college now taking applications

Applications are now being accepted for the newest session of Durham Neighborhood College, a series of classes designed to teach citizens about the organization, operations, and services of our local governments.

Classes begin Sept. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and will be held on nine Thursday nights and one Saturday morning. Space is limited to 25 people. Students must attend eight of 10 classes to complete the program.

A light meal is served prior to the start of each class and sessions are held at city and county facilities. There is a $30 fee for citizens accepted to attend the program, and five scholarships are available if needed. High school students ages 15 and up, as well as Latino residents, are particularly encouraged to apply.
