After Campbell, what next?

The news that Colin Campbell is stepping down from his position atop the NHL's disciplinary apparatus is good news for the game of hockey. Nothing against Campbell, who had an increasingly impossible job answering to very differently motivated constituencies, but some kind of change was clearly needed.

Brendan Shanahan will take over, the logical next step in his administrative career, but Campbell's experience demonstrated that this may be too big a job for one man, or at least too much pressure for one man.

The solution? More concrete sentencing guidelines, applied by a three-person panel.
