12-team prep softball scrimmage set for Saturday at Smithfield Community Park

Smithfield Community Park and the Smithfield-Selma High School softball team will co-host a benefit prep softball scrimmage jamboree on Saturday at Smithfield Community Park. The event, which features 12 teams, will begin at 9 a.m. and continues until about 5 p.m.
Proceeds will support the Miracle League of Johnston County, a non-profit organization that provides a baseball league for the mentally and physically handicapped children at no charge. Games are scheduled during spring and fall seasons at the Smithfield Community Park.
Team participating include in the softball scrimmages are Smithfield-Selma, Fayetteville Pine Forest, Clayton, Princeton, Triton, Corinth Holders, Harnett Central, South Johnston, South View, West Johnston and North Johnston.

Four Oaks Bank Cup girls soccer tournament begins Monday

The annual Johnston County high schools' girls soccer championship, The Four Oaks Bank Cup, helps kick off the spring sports season in the area next week. The tournament will include all eight Johnston County squads. Monday's quarterfinal round is played at four different sites, with action on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday all at South Johnston High School's Ronald Avery Stadium.

The championship match is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night.

West Johnston wrestlers advance to 4-A dual team regionals

West Johnston moved into the regional round of the NCHSAA 4-A dual team wrestling state championship tournament Tuesday night, taking out Tri-Nine Conference powers Holly Springs (45-31) and Panther Creek (29-28) in the opening rounds. The Wildcats will be making their first regional round appearance on Thusday night.

First-year schools Cleveland and Corinth Holders both dropped their first round dual playoff matches tonight. Corinth Holders fell to Burlington Cummings, 48-25, while Havelock topped Cleveland, 40-36.

Cleveland to host opening rounds of 3-A state dual wrestling tournament

First-year school Cleveland will host the first and second rounds in the NCHSAA 3-A dual team wrestling tournament on Tuesday night. The Rams, who qualified by finishing second in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference, will welcome Havelock (16-0), West Brunswick (18-5) and Eden Morehead (15-3) for the two-round event.

First-year Cleveland High wrestling team clinches playoff spot in wrestling

Cleveland High School's wrestling team earned a state dual wrestling playoff birth in its first year of competition Tuesday night with a 42-36 victory over Eastern Wayne. The Rams finished the season 4-1 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference and will participate in the state tournament on Tuesday at a site to be determined.
Derrick Applewhite, Delaney Ahola, Dakota Hill, Chance Wallace, Holden Bohannon all won via pinfall for Cleveland in the match, while Josiah Evans took a win by decision.
Rams' 160-pounder Chris Monge won the night's most competitive match, downing Jamel Barrett in overtime. Joey McKinney and James Barrett posted wins via forfeit for the Rams.
