A Super Tuesday of league openers in prep baseball and softball

Super Tuesday in the presidential election is behind us, but today brings another kind of super Tuesday in the world of high school sports. Conference play in baseball and softball for the Northern Carolina 2A, Eastern Carolina 3A and Greater Neuse River 4A all begin today and there are solid match ups all around.
In the GNRC, the highlight game on the baseball side is a meeting of undefeated squads as Smithfield-Selma hosts West Johnston at 7 p.m.

Prep Baseball: Annual Johnston County tournament adds eighth team, format back to normal

The annual Johnston County Easter Invitational baseball tournament is back to its traditional eight-team format after plans were announced to go with just seven teams last week. Corinth Holders has joined the tournament field. The event runs March 31 - April 3 at South Johnston High School's Bruce Coats Field.

The field includes Johnston County schools Smithfield-Selma, Clayton, Cleveland, West Johnston, Corinth Holders and South Johnston along with Middle Creek and Rocky Mount.

Full schedule for the Brittany Soccer Showcase

Seventy-two high school girls soccer games are on tap in late March for The Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Showcase, held at the J. Burt Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.

Among the area teams competing are: Broughton, Millbrook, Wakefield, East Wake, Clayton, North Johnston, East Chapel Hill, Cardinal Gibbons and Franklinton.

Updates on the annual Four Oaks Bank Cup girls soccer tournament - featuring all eight Johnston County girls soccer sqauds - this week. All of the remaining matches are being played at Princeton High School.

Friday's boys NCHSAA sectional finals

Garner will host Millbrook in a clash of Triangle powers on Friday, with the winner advancing to next week's regionals. It's not the only high-powered showdown, as Apex, Clayton and Person travel to some of the state's top teams.

Oxford Webb and Isaiah Hicks play at Fayetteville Westover, while Triton hosts Northeastern Guilford.

All game times are 7 p.m.
