Pintful: New Clayton brewery embraces its local roots

My N&O colleague in Clayton, Amanda James, gives us the latest on the area's newest brewery: Deep River Brewing Company.

"Husband-and-wife owners Paul and Lynn Auclair say the Deep River Brewing Company in Clayton will be open within the next 30 days. The Auclairs have taken time to think about what will make this brewery stand-out, and how it can represent Johnston County. Freshly chopped wood that was repurposed from an old tobacco barn lines the bar wall of the tap-room from the floor to the ceiling. There are also unique ingredients in the beer flavors that rely on produce from locals.

“We will be getting blueberries, honey, white sweet potatoes, and watermelon from local farmers,” said Auclair. There are six beer flavors that will rotate on tap. Two of the beers will be year-round, and there are four seasonal beers. The summertime beer is called Double Don Golden Lager. It is made with watermelon from Johnston County, and won first place in the 2011 Piedmont Brewer’s Cup for Fruit Beer. The winter time beer, JoCo White Winter, relies on the white sweet potatoes and toasted marshmallows, as well as spices for its signature flavor.

"The year-round brews include the Twisted River Wit, a belgian witbier, with hints of citrus, and the Riverbank Rye-It, an amber pale ale with subtle hints of rye. Some of the beers are aged in old Jack Daniels whiskey barrels." Read the full story here.

Novo Nordisk shares tumble after FDA denies approval of diabetes drug

Novo Nordisk, the Danish drug company that has a manufacturing facility in Clayton, announced Sunday that federal regulators have denied approval of its insulin drug Tresiba.

The announcement sent Novo Nordisk shares tumbling Monday morning.

The Copenhagen-based company said it received on Friday a Complete Response Letter from the Food and Drug Administration, which is what the agency issues when its review process is complete and a drug application is not ready for approval.

The FDA is requesting additional data to evaluate the drugs' potential cardiovascular risks.

Taste beer from breweries on the horizon in the Triangle

I just wanted to alert you guys to a few opportunities to drink beer from breweries in the works in the Triangle:

NCSU recruit Matt Tenuta signs with Kansas City Royals; Triangle players selected in MLB Draft

N.C. State recruit Matt Tenuta, a lefthanded pitcher from Apex High who led the Triangle in strikeouts this season, has already signed with the Kansas City Royals, who selected him in the 25th round (763rd overall) of this week's 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.

Tenuta's father Jon is the linebackers coach at N.C. State, and when the latter turned down Illinois this offseason, he said in a statement that watching his son play college baseball was a reason why. By signing with Kansas City, Matt forgoes his college eligibility and should report to the minor leagues within the coming weeks.

In total, four former area players and four current ones were selected in the draft.
