PPP not yet releasing school poll results

We're getting partial poll results from Public Policy Polling.

The Democratic polling firm released survey results Thursday indicating the public isn't happy with how Republicans elected Tony Gurley to be the new chairman of the Wake County board of commissioners.

But PPP didn't release results from that same poll about questions they had asked about the Wake County school system.

Backlash against supporters of new board

It took some guts to speak in support of the new Wake County school board majority at Tuesday's meeting.

Of the 48 people who spoke, only 12 praised the new board. Most of the speakers and audience consisted of supporters of current policies who were vocal when they disagreed with speakers.

Russell Capps, president of the Wake County Taxpayers Association, drew jeers when he cited the recent Civitas Institute poll to argue that the the overwhelming majority of parents support the new board's efforts.

Civitas survey finds support for auditing school legal expenses

While not part of the poll released this morning, the conservative Civitas Institute also asked people about conducting the audit of Wake County school legal services.

People were asked "In 2008, Wake County Schools spent $1.8 million on legal fees and insurance for legal actions. Should that spending be reviewed for savings by an independent firm? You can also be undecided."

Based on that question, 58.3 percent said they supported reviewing spending while 11.4 percent said they did not. A total of 30.3 percent had no opinion.

Civitas survey finds opposition to mandatory year-round and diversity policy

A new poll released this morning by the conservative Civitas Institute found strong opposition in Wake County to mandatory year-round schools and the diversity policy.

According to the poll, 74.9 percent said they support giving parents a choice on calendar with 18.1 percent supporting mandatory year-round. On the issue of diversity, 68.3 percent said they were opposed to the diversity policy while 22.0 percent were in support.

Civitas says the poll shows "overwhelming majorities of Wake County voters support the new School Board's efforts."

Civitas and PPP polls about the school system

Both the Civitas Institute and Public Policy Polling have been calling residents over the weekend for polls about the Wake County school system.

Civitas, a conservative Raleigh-based thinktank, hired a Georgia firm to poll people on the diversity policy. Francis DeLuca, the group's executive director, said the poll results will be available Tuesday.

Potential grounds for a NAACP lawsuit

Can the Leandro case be used to block any attempt to abandon Wake's diversity policy?

As noted in today's article, the state NAACP is citing Leandro and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as possible grounds to stall any changes that would be made by the new school board majority.

"We'll look at the policies that are implemented, then monitor new policies to make sure any changes don't violate the federal or state constitutions," said the Rev. William Barber, head of the state NAACP, in the article.

Civitas survey finds limited support for Wake schools

A new survey from the Civitas Institute shows limited support for the Wake school system and the diversity policy.

Civitas surveyed 500 Wake likely voters earlier this month on a variety of topics such as student reassignment, diversity, school funding and teacher pay. Keep in mind the conservative perspective that Civitas is coming from, which can be seen in the way some questions are worded.

Civitas' conservative perspective doesn't mean you ignore the survey results. But it's something you keep in mind, just like you'd do when looking at surveys from the Democrat-leaning Public Policy Polling.
