Kroger news on double coupons

Kroger made big news in the coupon world last week when it announced it will end double coupons in the Cincinnati, Dayton and Northern Kentucky markets.

And it's not the first time Kroger, based in Cincinnati, has pulled the plug on doubling coupons.

The grocery chain, the nation's largest, previously halted double coupon promotions in parts of Texas and California, leaving coupon shoppers wondering if double coupons will eventually become a thing of the past at Kroger-affiliated stores nationwide.

Duke player to watch:

Desmond Scott
Senior, wide receiver,
5-9, 190 pounds
Duke’s two main receiving threats, Conner Vernon and Jamison Crowder, will match up against Cincinnati’s best pass defenders. Scott, though, has a knack for finding holes in the secondary, particularly on third down. Against North Carolina, two of Scott’s three catches resulted in third-down conversions, and he converted 3rd-and-27 and 3rd-and-19 in the Blue Devils’ win at Wake Forest. On the year, he finished with 61 catches for 606 yards and tied a Duke record with three games with at least 10 catches (against Stanford, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech).

Cincinnati player to watch:

Greg Blair
Senior, linebacker
6-2, 252 pounds
A junior college transfer who missed most of last season with a knee injury, Blair was given an opportunity to start this year, and he made an immediate impact, leading Cincinnati in total tackles (123) and tackles for loss (8.5). The first-team all-Big East selection recorded at least 10 tackles in seven games and also finished the regular season with six pass breakups, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble. Athleticism runs in his family— his older brother, DeJuan Blair, starred at Pittsburgh has a basketball player and is a four-year NBA veteran who plays for the San Antonio Spurs.

Duke's best win:

Cincinnati embarrasses the Wolfpack 44-14

CINCINNATI — If it could go wrong for N.C. State on Thursday night, it did.

Cincinnati turned the national showcase game on ESPN against the Wolfpack into a national embarrassment with a 44-14 bludgeoning at Nippert Stadium.

N.C. State (2-2) was hoping for a bounce-back from a loss in its first game against a major Division I opponent this season, instead it took a step back with a barrage of turnovers and mental miscues.

Wolfpack posts big win off short turnaround

RALEIGH -- There were no tired legs when N.C. State was on the field Thursday night.

And aside from Tuffy, the wolflike Tamaskan dog mascot, nobody on the Wolfpack sideline had a tongue hanging out of his mouth.

Russell Wilson passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns as N.C. State defeated Cincinnati 30-19 at Carter-Finley Stadium, putting to rest coach Tom O’Brien’s concerns about playing just five days after a grueling Saturday night game in the Central Florida heat and humidity.

Holland: Holtz is staying

East Carolina football coach Skip Holtz is staying, Pirates athletics director Terry Holland told the Raleigh Sports Club at Highland Methodist Church Wednesday.

"We kept our coach," Holland said. "Thank goodness. And what a terrific guy he is."

Cincinnati, which Holtz turned down in 2007, apparently will hire Central Michigan coach Butch Jones.

Tudor's Take: Holtz and Cincy have a history

East Carolina coach Skip Holtz turned down Cincinnati in 2007 and Pirate fans hope history repeats itself.

Cincinnati is the latest school to eye Holtz, it was Kansas last week, and the ECU football coach could have another list of pros and cons to weigh.
