"Breaking In" could be just what Christian Slater needs

TV hasn't been very kind to Christian Slater, but I think with "Breaking In" (Fox, 9:30 tonight) he's getting out of his slump.

He's the name in the half-hour comedy, but he's not the focus. It's a team effort and it uses just enough Slater in just the right way. It's not yet a great show, but it's totally enjoyable and rife with potential.

At the center is Bret Harrison ("Reaper") as Cameron, a college slacker (again) and ace computer hacker who gets busted by Oz (Slater) who helms a firm that companies hire to break into their businesses and expose security breaches. Oz forces Cameron to join his firm or face exposure and explusion from college.

What to Watch on Wednesday: Christian Slater tries again

American Idol (8pm, Fox) - The show, which runs only 90 minutes tonight, is down to 9 singers. They'll be singing songs from artists in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Don't forget to keep track of all things McCreery at our Scotty Watch home base.

Breaking In (9:30pm, Fox) - The premiere of a promising new comedy about a high-tech security firm that protects its clients by exposing their vulnerabilities. Christian Slater, in this third attempt at a successful TV series, plays the boss, who blackmails a perpetual college student/computer hacker (Bret Harrison) to be his intern. This is Slater's first shot at a sitcom, and he certainly can't ask for a better lead-in. Executive produced by Adam Sandler. Read our review.

Justified (10pm, FX) - Mags Bennett and Carol Johnson finally talk business, but with Boyd sitting in and Raylan standing guard. Earlier, Coover (has a creepier character ever existed on television?) overhears his mother talking about him to young Loretta, and he doesn't like what he hears.

Law & Order: SVU (10pm, NBC) - Family vengeance factors into a rape case in which both the cops and the suspect seek outside help: Former ADA Casey Novak (Diane Neal) assists the detectives, while the accused man recruits his cousin, 'Law & Order: Los Angeles' DDA Jonah Decker (Terrence Howard).

Tori & Dean: sTORIbook Weddings (10pm, Oxygen) - A new reality series in which Hollywood couple Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott create dream weddings for others. Tonight's premiere features a dog-themed ceremony. Here's our review.

Top Chef All-Stars: Reunion (10pm, Bravo) - Andy Cohen hosts a reunion featuring the all-star contestants, host Padma Lakshmi, and judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons. I'm thinking this is where we'll see that fight between Elia and Colicchio.

Workaholics (10:30pm, Comedy Central) - The premiere of a new comedy following the antics of three hard-partying college grads at their telemarketing job, where the guys must go to extremes to pass a drug test.

Top Chef: Masters (11pm, Bravo) - Stay tuned after the 'All-Stars' reunion for the premiere of Season 3 of 'Masters.' Chef Curtis Stone is on board this season as host (an improvement) and the season looks great. Our thoughts on the premiere.

Also tonight: The season finale of ABC's 'Off the Map' (10pm) and the premiere of a new reality series on Lifetime about life at a pagaent gown shop in a small town in Tennessee. 'Glamour Belles' airs at 10pm.

Canceled: ABC ends "Eastwick," orders more "Forgotten"

ABC has decided to pass on more episodes of "Eastwick," essentially canceling the show after its 13-episode run ends later this fall. ABC says it will air all the episodes.

Despite strong lead-ins from hit new sitcoms "Modern Family" and "Cougar Town" on Wednesday nights, "Eastwick" had pretty weak ratings. Last week's episode only attracted about 4.6 million viewers (roughly the same atrocious ratings Jay Leno has been drawing lately).

On the bright side, ABC has ordered five more episodes of Christian Slater's new show "The Forgotten," which has consistently scored better than "Eastwick."

"The Forgotten" airs on Tuesday nights at 10pm, except for this week, when it's pre-empted by "In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: Bright Lights, Big Stars, All Access Nashville," a special promoting the CMA awards (which airs Wednesday, November 11).

Christian Slater making new career in TV

With two TV series in as many years now on his resume, Christian Slater seems to have set aside his movie star career (for now) in hopes of making it big on the small screen.

Last season's "My Own Worst Enemy" on NBC was cancelled pretty quickly -- not because it was bad, most likely because it was too complicated for many viewers.

Slater is giving it another try now with a Jerry Bruckheimer procedural airing tonight on ABC called "The Forgotten" (10pm). Slater plays the father of kidnapped girl who devotes his life to solving cold case crimes.
