Trying to determine who leaked the Debra Goldman police report to the media

There's a wrinkle in the efforts to find out who leaked a copy of the 2010 Cary police report that included the salacious details about Wake County school board members Debra Goldman and Chris Malone.

Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby isn't certain what happened to the copy of the report that he was provided by the Cary police. But whether that means his office's copy is the one that was leaked to the media is uncertain.

Cary Police Chief Pat Bazemore, who is investigating how the report was leaked, has said that the document sent to the media appears to be a copy of a printout that her department made at Willoughby's request in October 2011. Bazemore says that she doesn't believe anyone in her department is responsible for the leak.

Wake County school system gives updated report to AdvancED

The Wake County school system is telling AdvancED that it's on its way toward completing all seven of the action steps requested by the accrediting organization.

When AdvancED raised the accreditation of the high schools in January to advised status, Wake still had two of the seven steps to complete. In this new update released this morning, Wake says it's completed one of those action steps and will soon get the other one done.

Wake is pointing to the board passing the strategic plan in August and the policy committee recommending passage of a policy on defining the role of resolutions.

Wake's update doesn't get into the complaint filed by the Wake County Taxpayers Association over the firing of Superintendent Tony Tata since that response isn't required until Dec. 18. The update also doesn't get into the recent controversy involving school board members Debra Goldman and Chris Malone.

Liberals complaining about Chris Malone saying he wants "to get good kids out of failing schools"

Wake County school board member and state House candidate Chris Malone is drawing complaints from liberal groups for a robocall saying he wants "to get good kids out of failing schools."

In a blog post Wednesday for the liberal Independent Weekly, Will Huntsberry quotes Malone saying in the robocall that "I want to get good kids out of failing schools, so every single kid can have a great education." The post also has the full text of the robocall.

"Such logic seems flawed," Huntsberry writes. "If Malone pulls the 'good kids' — Does this mean white kids? Rich kids? Smart kids? — out of 'failing schools,' it’s unclear how the failing school will then be more likely to provide a 'great education.'"

Progress NC Action launches website saying Chris Malone "failed our schools"

Wake County school board member Chris Malone is getting the Heather Losurdo treatment from Progress NC Action in his run as the Republican candidate for the state House District 35 seat.

Progress NC Action, a liberal advocacy group, has created this website charging that Malone has "failed our schools." The website includes links to media reports about his relationship with fellow school board member Debra Goldman, the bus problems at the start of the school year and how budget cuts led to parents helping out with janitorial duties at schools.

"We need a legislator that will put kids first, not their dating life," says the website.

Wake County school board members address recent controversy

All nine Wake County school board members are at today's meeting.

After the end of the policy committee meeting, board member Debra Goldman blamed the recent media reports about the 2010 burglary of her home on estranger husband Steven Goldman, who has denied leaking the police narrative report to the media.

"Stop the tabloid journalism," Goldman told a gaggle of reporters. "Stop reporting the false allegations."

Wake County school board to meet today for first time since Goldman-Malone controversy

Amid the likely media circus today, the Wake County school board does have business to conduct.

During the work session, staff will discuss the proposed student assignment plan timeline and likely get last-minute feedback before unveiling the plan on Nov. 13. The board is scheduled to adopt the timeline during the regular meeting.

Also today, the board will vote on which grades to offer for the CTE high school.

Online petitions calling for Debra Goldman and Chris Malone to leave the Wake County school board

Two separate online petitions have been created urging that Debra Goldman and Chris Malone be removed or resign from the Wake County school board because of the allegations they had a romantic relationship.

This petition says that both should be removed because their actions "call their character and capability of acting in the best interest of the students of Wake County." The General Assembly would need to pass a law to allow for any school board members in Wake to be recalled.

This other petition
accuses the duo of violating the school board code of ethics, including the section saying board members should "take no private action that will compromise the Board or administration." The petition asks them to voluntarily resign.

Some GOP politicians backing away from Wake County school board member Chris Malone's bid for General Assembly

Some local Republican elected officials are backing away from their endorsements or denying they made them in Wake County school board member Chris Malone's bid to win the state House 35 seat.

As noted in today's North Raleigh News article by Paul A. Specht and Colin Campbell, some GOP politicians are distancing themselves from Malone since the recent reports about his relationship with fellow school board member Debra Goldman. In some ways, the reaction is similar to how state GOP officials are distancing themselves from Goldman in her run for state auditor.

“I know I endorsed him in the past,” said Commissioner Phil Matthews, vice chairman of the commissioners, of Malone. “But, I have not voted yet and am going to wait and see how things go before I take things further.”

Wake County school board member Debra Goldman speaks out on 2010 police report

Wake County school board member Debra Goldman is speaking out about the recent controversy that has engulfed her run for state auditor and shaken up the school board and community.

As noted in today's article, Goldman called untrue statements that fellow school board member Chris Malone made to Cary police in 2010 that they had a romantic relationship. She's also firing shots at former school board chairman Ron Margiotta for suggesting her vote against the zone plan in 2010 might have been tied to her issues with Malone.

In the three-hour interview with the N&O on Saturday, Goldman also dealt with topics such as why her family has contacted Cary police so much, why she contacted Cary police about school board vice chairman Keith Sutton and her plans should she not be elected auditor.

Wake County school board committee to discuss Debra Goldman's transparency policy on Tuesday

Will Wake County school board members Debra Goldman and Chris Malone show up at Tuesday's board meeting to be bombarded by the media with questions about the recently unveiled revelations from a 2010 police report?

What could make the issue more interesting is that the school board's policy committee, where Goldman is the vice chairwoman, is set to meet before the full board's work session. On Tuesday's policy committee agenda is the proposed transparency policy that Goldman introduced.

Goldman has on multiple occasions complained that the full board and policy committee haven't been discussing the transparency policy. Goldman has argued the school system needs to be more transparent in how it provides information to the public.

If Goldman comes to Tuesday's meeting, it's likely someone will compare the transparency she's advocating for in policy with how she's handled the allegations raised in the police report. Goldman said in a Monday statement that she considers the matters from the 2010 police report to be "closed."
