Democrats questioning whether a runoff should be held in District 3

Look for a battle over the next month to influence voters in Wake County's school board District 3 runoff election.

But as noted in today's article, you've got some questions in the meantime. One, should Heather Losurdo ask for a runoff? Two, would it have made a difference if the Wake County Republican Party had backed Jennifer Mansfield instead of Losurdo to run against Kevin Hill?

On the first question, it's not a surprise that Democrats say they'd hope Losurdo would refrain from asking for the runoff.

CORRECTION

The high-end estimate for a runoff is $150,000.

Potential confusion about voting tomorrow

Speaking of voting, do you know whether you're eligible to vote tomorrow in  one of the five Wake County school board races?

As noted in today's article by Thomas Goldsmith, the Wake County Board of Commissioners turned down the request from the Wake County Board of Elections earlier this year to spend $120,000 to send postcards to voters letting them know their voting districts had changed.

It's an issue considering a number of voters changed school board districts as a result of new maps adopted this year.

Investigating Clay Aiken's voter registration status

While it may not be likely, Clay Aiken could actually be prosecuted over voting in last month's school board election.

As noted in today's aricle by Josh Shaffer, the Wake County Board of Elections will hold a hearing on Wake GOP Chairman Claude Pope's challenge of Aiken's voter registration status. Although Pope's press release says they're not seeking punitive action against Aiken, that might not matter.

The Wake Board of Elections will first decide whether Aiken should still be registered to vote in the county. They'll ask Aiken questions such as where his pets spend the night and where he goes to sleep at night.

District 2 runoff on unless state says otherwise

Until the state Board of Elections decides on the issue, the District 2 school boar runoff is still set to take place on Nov. 3.

That's the message Wake County Board of Elections Director Cherie Poucher is telling people. She said this means that groups who'd file campaign finance runoff reports that are due Monday must still do.

State Board of Elections to decide on school board runoff

You can add the Wake school board runoff mess to the list of items that the state Board of Elections will handle next week.

The Wake County Board of Elections unanimously voted today to ask the state board for guidance on whether to still hold the Nov. 3 runoff in the District 2 race. That contest could decide the future direction of the school system.

When the state board gets to the runoff issue is uncertain. They'd have to fit it into a busy meeting schedule that begins on Monday with the hearing into former Governor Mike Easley's campaign finances.
