What to Watch on Thursday: A strong premiere night on NBC

Charlie's Angels (8pm, ABC) - A remake of the 1970s hit show starring Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh, and Rachael Taylor. I'm not a fan. You're better served watching "Community." Or "Big Bang Theory." Or "The X-Factor." Or anything else.

Community (8pm, NBC) - In the Season 3 premiere, the study group wonder if Pierce will join them as they gather at the start of a new semester. Also, Jeff clashes with his biology teacher (Michael K. Williams, "The Wire," "Boardwalk Empire") and is kicked out of class, and Dean Pelton has a new nemesis at Greendale -- John Goodman.

Big Bang Theory (8pm, CBS) - Two new back-to-back episodes open the fifth season. First, Penny hits a low point when she realizes what she's done by sleeping with Raj, and Sheldon becomes leader of the paintball team. Later, Penny and Sheldon clash and Amy is caught in the middle.

Parks and Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Leslie is faced with the difficult decision when she decides to run for office in the Season 4 opener. Meanwhile, Ron prepares for the return of his first wife (Patricia Clarkson).

Person of Interest (9pm, CBS) - A new drama following a presumed-dead CIA agent (Jim Caviezel) and a billionaire software genius (Michael Emerson) who try to stop crimes before they happen. Adrienne likes it. Read more.

The Office (9pm, NBC) - In the Season 8 premiere, the staffers discover their names on a mysterious list authored by new Sabre CEO, played by James Spader (right). Paranoia sweeps through the office as everyone speculates about what the list means.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - Meredith is fired in tonight's two-hour Season 8 premiere. I have nothing against "Grey's," but there's better stuff on.

Whitney (9:30pm, NBC) - A new sitcom about about unmarried couple Whitney (Whitney Cummings) and Alex (Chris D'Elia). Is it funny? Adrienne says ...

Prime Suspect (10pm, NBC) - A new series about a NYC homicide detective (Maria Bello) coping with sexism and harassment from colleauges while working murder cases. Also stars Aidan Quinn. It's a remake of Helen Mirren's classic PBS series, but it's quite good. I think you should watch.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - In the fourth season opener, Jane is in prison and must prove that the man he killed was Red John. Lisbon wants Van Pelt to get counseling for having to shoot her fiance when it was discovered he was Red John's inside man. So that Red John thing is over, right?

THE NEW FALL SEASON: 'Charlie's Angels'

"Charlie's Angels"
Thursday, 8 p.m. on ABC

The pilot episode ABC made available said "not for review purposes," so this isn't so much a review as it is a warning...

This remake of the 1970s hit (which starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith) sends fresh new angels on complicated "Burn Notice" type missions, but minus any semblance of reality at all. Not that the original "Charlie's Angels" was teeming with realism, but the original at least seemed to recognize it wasn't meant to be taken very seriously. And I would think the goal here, even if not to improve on the original, would be to at least not make it worse.

Between the fashion model glamour and the pounding soundtrack accompanying the Angels' missions, I felt like I was watching a series of clichéd, strung-together music videos. And neither the acting nor the writing is any good, so what you end up with is 45 minutes of mindless eye candy (i.e. hot women fighting in sexy clothes). Shoot, even the formerly paternal Bosley character has been transformed into a tech-savvy hottie (played by Ramon Rodriguez) in this remake, and a total hound dog to boot.

And then there's Minka Kelly (who previously starred in "Friday Night Lights" and The Derek Jeter Story). Minka is very pretty, to be sure, but not exactly known for her fine acting ability. Her performance here won't improve that reputation. At all. I can't stress that enough.

Watch something else.

TV Land Awards honor "Charlie's Angels," "Raymond," "Glee"

The 8th annual TV Land Awards show tonight will honor the contributions of comedy legends Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, as well as classic shows "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Charlie's Angels."

Tim Allen ("Home Improvement") is the host, and there's a tribute to Farrah Fawcett, who passed away last summer. I would assume John Forsythe, who died earlier this month, will be getting a little love too.

Also on tap: A "Bosom Buddies" reunion with Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari . . .

John Forsythe of "Dynasty" and "Charlie's Angels" has died

John Forsythe, best known as oil tycoon Blake Carrington on ABC's hugely popular 1980s drama "Dynasty," died late yesterday of complications from cancer.

He was 92.

Before "Dynasty," Forsythe was the star of the sitcom "Bachelor Father" (1957-1962), and in the 1970s was the voice of the mysterious Charlie on "Charlie's Angels." On "Charlie's Angels," Forsythe was heard but never seen.

On "Dynasty," Forsythe's character was routinely fought over by villainous ex-wife Alexis (Joan Collins) and angelic current wife Krystle (Linda Evans).

Born in New Jersey, Forsythe attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but dropped out after three years to take a job as a ballpark announcer at Ebbets Field for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Forsythe was nominated for three Emmys for his work on "Dynasty," but never won. He was nominated for six Golden Globes and won twice.

"Charlie's Angel" Farrah Fawcett dies

Farrah Fawcett, who will forever be Jill Munroe from "Charlie's Angels" in our hearts, has died.

Fawcett had battled cancer since 2006, and her fight to find a cure for her disease was recounted in a documentary special called "Farrah's Story," which aired on NBC in May.

In addition to starring as one of Charlie's angelic detectives in the popular 1970s TV series, Fawcett also starred in television movies such as "The Burning Bed" and "Small Sacrifrices," for which she earned critical acclaim.

Fawcett was perhaps most famous for her gorgeous . . .
