Three conference finals tonight in the county

East Chapel Hill defeated Riverside 58-38 Thursday night to advance to tonight’s championship final of the Piedmont Athletic Conference basketball tournament. The second-seeded Wildcats will host No. 1-seeded Jordan at 8 p.m. at East.
East also hosts the girls’ final, which features No. 1 Northern Durham against No. 2 Hillside at 6 p.m.

Those are just two of the six championship finals tonight in Orange County.
In the Carolina-10, Northwood's boys and girls teams both reached tonight’s finals at Cedar Ridge High School. The Northwood girls play River Mill Academy at 6 p.m. and the Charger boys take on Carrboro at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Carrboro’s boys defeated tournament host Cedar Ridge 68-43 Thursday to advance. Northwood topped Granville Central 69-50 Wednesday in the tournament’s first semifinal.

The CHHS girls’ and boys’ teams won their semifinal games this week in the Carolina-Six Conference basketball tournament and will play tonight at Carrboro High for their respective championship finals. (The CHHS gyms were booked in advance for the NCHSAA 3-A Mid-East wrestling regionals.)

The CHHS girls play top-seeded Cardinal Gibbons at 6 p.m. Friday, and the boys follow 20 minutes after that first game ends, at approximately 7:45 p.m.

Northeastern 21, Cedar Ridge 7

ELIZABETH CITY - Friday night in the 2-AA Eastern Region championship game, Cedar Ridge ran into the same problems the previous 12 Northeastern opponents faced and the Red Wolves saw their season end by a 21-7 score.

The 13-2 Eagles will go on to play Salisbury next Saturday in the state championship game at Wake Forest University.

Cedar Ridge 28, Northwood 20

PITTSBORO - In the third round of the NCHSAA 2-A playoffs, Northwood found out just how hard it is to beat a good team twice.

After beating conference foe Cedar Ridge at home in the regular-season finale to capture the conference crown, Northwood couldn’t find the same formula on Friday night, falling 28-20 to the Red Wolves.

Cedar Ridge 23, Randleman 20 (OT)

HILLSBOROUGH -  Cedar Ridge quarterback Cam Pappas told his team not to worry. Even though Randleman High had just retaken the lead with 1:38 left in the game, Pappas said nobody panicked.

Instead, the Red Wolves calmly drove 70 yards on seven plays to seal a 23-20 win on a Pappas 24-yard over-the-middle strike to Fred Blanks with 11.6 seconds left in the second round of the Mid-Carolina 2-A high school playoffs. Cedar Ridge will meet Pittsboro Northwood next Friday night.

Northwood 41, Cedar Ridge 17

PITTSBORO — With his team up 28-17 with more than eight minutes left in the conference championship-deciding game, Northwood’s Austin Matthews burst through the line, confronted punter Brandon Phares and gobbled up the punt to take it down to the 6-yard-line.

The block set up Northwood’s third fourth-quarter touchdown and distanced the Chargers (7-4, 4-0) from their Carolina-10 opponents, eventually winning the game and the conference title with the 41-17 victory.

Cedar Ridge 20, Carrboro 14

CARRBORO — Just as many great rivalry games are, this one was decided in the closing seconds.

Johnathan Allison recovered a fumble after Carrboro’s Derek Bryant was sacked at the Cedar Ridge 7 with 10 seconds left, preserving the Red Wolves’ 20-14 win over their Orange county rivals Friday night at the Jaguars’ field.
