First round tennis scores

Green Hope wasn't the only boys tennis team advancing to the second round of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs.

Apex defeated Durham Jordan on the road, 6-0, and will now play at Broughton.

For two more Tri-Nine teams, however, it was the end of the road. Cary, which finished third in the Tri-9 and earned a wild-card spot, lost 9-0 to East Chapel Hill. East Chapel Hill will host Green Hope in the next round.

Fuquay-Varina, which wasn't on the initial playoff bracket but later replaced Fayetteville Jack Britt after Britt reported an incorrect record, lost at Broughton.

Jerry Winterton by the numbers

Jerry Winterton, one of the most successful high school coaches in the country, will not return to the Cary High wrestling program that has dominated the state for almost 30 years.


"It's time," Winterton said. "I think a younger guy might be able to do a better job."

A better job seems impossible given the numbers:

Cary falls in 4-A wrestling finals

Winston-Salem Park defeated Cary 38-14 in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A dual-team wrestling championships on Sunday night.

Orange is at home tonight against Concord in the NCHSAA 3-A dual-team final.

Cary will host next round

Cary High will host the next round of the state dual-team wrestling playoffs on Thursday.

The East regional semifinals and finals will be played that night.

Cary will take on Hope Mills South View in one semifinal match while Panther Creek and Southern Durham face off simultaneously. The start time is 6 p.m. The winners of each match will face one another immediately following completion of the semifnals with a state championship spot on the line.

Cary at home in quarterfinal wrestling

Cary and Panther Creek both advanced to the 4-A state dual-team wrestling quarterfinals. They two Tri-Nine teams would meet again if both can win quarterfinal matches Thursday night at Cary.
