Jerry Winterton by the numbers

This story was first reported by Tim Stevens of the N&O:

Jerry Winterton, one of the most successful high school coaches in the
country, will not return to the Cary High wrestling program that has
dominated the state for almost 30 years.

"It's time," Winterton said. "I think a younger guy might be able to do a better job."

A better job seems impossible given the numbers:

Four Tri-Nine teams enter dual-team playoffs

All year long, the Tri-Nine has been establishing itself as one of the state's top conferences.

Now, that dominance has been rewarded. Four teams got into this year's dual-team wrestling playoffs. The Tri-Nine gobbled both of the East region's wild card spots as Green Hope (26-6) and Holly Springs (21-6) each earned bids.

Green Hope will face Cary (30-0) in the first round and the two teams are in the same pod as New Bern and Northern Durham.

The four-team pods will wrestle on Tuesday, with one team emerging to play on Thursday in the East regional semifinals and finals. The one team that comes from that foursome will play for the state title.

Cary to name gym in honor of Adams

Cary High School will name its basketball gymnasium in honor of Charlie Adams this fall.

The Wake County School Board approved high school's request to name the facility in honor of Adams, a former player, teacher and coach at the school.

Adams served as the executive director of the N.C. High School Athletic Association for 25 years and worked in the NCHSAA for 42 years before retiring on February 1, 2010. He also was president for one year of the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Cary's Hunter will not sign with State today

Fre'Shad Hunter, Cary High's exceptional defensive lineman, is not expected top sign a national letter of intent today.

Hunter had committed to N.C. State, but had dropped off the Cary High team during the season to concentrate on his academics.

"He is not going to sign with State," said Cary coach Ben Kolstad. "Right now, it is a little up in the air. I expect he'll go to a prep school or to a junior college."

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end is ranked No. 13 on The Charlotte Observer's Top 25 list.
