AAU basketball teams turn out for Kenny Inge Invitational

Even when temperatures push 100, it’s basketball season in the Triangle.

Nineteen AAU boys teams from the region converged over the weekend for the Kenny Inge Invitational Tournament at Cary Academy.

The tournament, named for and hosted by the former N.C. State star, raised scholarship funds for underprivileged kids and was put on by the Basketball Heights charitable foundation, tournament spokesman Rob Orton of the Cary Cougars said.

Cougars bounced from AAU tournament's final four

The Cary Cougars' 16U team ended its season in the USBA Tournament's final four round on Saturday. The Cougars were upset by the Charlotte Mustangs 71-69.

The Mustangs hit an astounding 11-of-15 3-pointers (73 percent), including eight in the first half.

The Cougars were out-rebounded 39-31 and shot 39 percent from the field — not quite enough to keep up with the Mustangs' 54 percent.

Cary, which trailed 32-30 at the half, actually held a 10-point advantage with seven minutes left in the game, but the Mustangs' 3-point barrage erased the lead quickly.

Bruce Lewis had 24 points for the Cougars, while Tariq Forte added 17 and Kameron Bryant 15. Austin Branned chipped in four as did Daniel Donley, and DomiNick Downing had two points. Sunil Ram had three points and a team-high seven assists.

The Cougars finished third at the USBA National Tournament and end their year 23-12 overall, 22-6 in their division.
