Triangle schools fare better on Newsweek's list of nation's best public high schools

Different methodologies are yielding different results on competing lists of the nation's top public high schools.

Four schools in the Triangle made the top 100 of Newsweek magazine’s “America’s Best High Schools 2012” list that was released this week. A total of 11 Triangle schools made the top 1,000 school list.

In contrast, only three schools in the entire state were in the top 1,000 in the U.S. News & World Report list released this month. Broughton High School in Raleigh was the only Triangle school in the top 1,000 on that list at 966.

NCHSAA boys lacrosse playoff pairings

The boys lacrosse playoffs start this Friday. Holly Springs and Carrboro earned wild-card spots while Broughton, Jordan, Chapel Hill and Cardinal Gibbons are No. 1 seeds after winning their respective conferences.

East Chapel Hill, a 2-seed, is the defending East regional champ while Northwest Guilford is the defending state champion.

Carolina-12 Basketball Tournament Results

The Carolina-12 Conference, which has both 1A and 2A members, splits its post-season basketball tournament by classification.

Northwood's boys were upset by Carrboro in the 2A tournament final, while the Northwood girls defeated host Granville Central.

Roxboro Community's boys thwarted a Cinderalla run by Franklin Academy in the 1A final, while River Mill's girls defeated Franklin Academy in the other final played at Durham's Voyager Academy.

Raleigh Charter, Carrboro win 1A/2A swim regional

Two defending state champions looked the part in Saturday evening's 1A/2A East swimming regional, as the Raleigh Charter girls and Carrboro boys won by landslides.

4th round of NCHSAA boys soccer

Each N.C. High School Athletic Association boys soccer bracket is down to the regional semifinals, which will be played Saturday. Winners will meet either Tuesday or Wednesday for the chance to play in next weekend's state championships.

East Chapel Hill quarterback Drew Davis, the son of former University of North Carolina coach Butch Davis, has set a state high school record for completions in a single game.

Durham Academy wins "Play 4 the Cure" field hockey tournament

Durham Academy won the “Play 4 the Cure” field hockey tournament on Saturday by defeating Charlotte Providence Day School 5-0 in the championship game. Tournament MVP Lauren Rogers had three goals in the title game, while Robin Blazing had the other two.

The two-day annual tournament, which raised money for breast cancer research, was hosted by Cary Academy. After pool play on Friday, the 12 teams were broken up into three four-team brackets on Saturday.

Tigers and Wildcats to meet in 'The OC'

Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill will play at 8 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Carrboro High School in the finals of The O.C. - an invitational soccer tournament that matched prep teams from Orange and Chtham counties.
