What to Watch on Thursday: Tried and true lineup changes little

Big Bang Theory (8pm, CBS) - For Season 4, "Big Bang Theory" moves to a new night and new time (formerly Monday nights at 9pm) where it goes up against "Community." Yikes (for both shows). Tonight, Sheldon goes on his first date ever and it's with Amy Fowler (Mayim Bialik). Somehow, Penny finds herself accompanying them.

Community (8pm, NBC) - In the Season 2 opener, the group reconvene to study for their anthropology class, which is taught by a kooky professor (Betty White, of course). Meanwhile, Senor Chang enrolls at Greendale in hopes of joining the study group.

Bones (8pm, Fox) - Season 6 begins seven months after last season's finale when the Jeffersonian team disbanded. They are called by to Washington when a case involving a case involving the body of an unidentified young boy could cost Cam her job.

My Generation (8pm, ABC) - A contrived new series from ABC in which a film crew revisits a group of high school students in Texas who were the subjects of a documentary style reality show ten years earlier. I urge you not to waste your time.

30 Rock (8:30pm, NBC) - Season 5 has Jack interfering with Liz's blooming romance with Carol (Matt Damon) in an effort to help her finally win a man's heart, and Tracy copes with Kenneth's termination as NBC page.

$#*! My Dad Says (8:30, CBS) - This new show (pronounced "Bleep My Dad Says") is based on a popular Twitter feed chronicling the outrageous observations of one guy's dad. It's a flimsy premise, even if it does star William Shatner. Check out our review.

Raleigh actress cut from "CSI" cast

Actress Liz Vassey will not be returning to "CSI" next season.

Vassey, who was born in Raleigh, has had a recurring role as DNA technician Wendy Simms on "CSI" since 2005, and just last season was elevated to the status of regular cast member and added to the show's opening credits.

CBS confirmed that she is not returning for Season 11, explaining that the show is going in a different creative direction.

Vassey's other notable acting roles include a stint on "All My Children," for which she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award, and also the role of Captain Liberty in the 2001 TV show, "The Tick." Vassey played in the short-lived show "Maximum Bob" with Beau Bridges, and had a small role in Joss Whedon's "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" playing the character Fury Leika.

What to Watch on Saturday: Relive the "Lost" pilot

CSI (8pm, CBS) - This repeat features Henry Thomas as a convicted murderer who claims his conviction was based on inaccurate evidence, false testimony, and errors committed by Catherine during her first solo case. She reinvestigates and sees the case slowly unravel.

Lost (8pm, ABC) - This is the original two-hour pilot from 2004. A doctor (Matthew Fox) takes charge after a plane crash strands 48 survivors on a Pacific island. Relive the magic (smoke monster! polar bear!) in anticipation of tomorrow night's big "Lost" finale extravaganza.

Disappeared (9pm, TLC) - This episode details the last day Chicago bluesman John Spira was seen before he disappeared on February 23, 2007.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - One of the better episodes from this past season repeats -- Tina Fey hosts with musical guest Justin Bieber

What to Watch on Thursday: Matt Damon on "30 Rock" finale

Bones (8pm, Fox) - In the fifth season finale, the death of a hoarder has the team sifting through the man's many possessions looking for clues. Angela gets a visit from her father, ZZ Top guitarist Billy F. Gibbons (left, as himself).

Community (8pm, NBC) - The Season 1 finale has Britta and Professor Slater vying for Jeff's affection. Also, when Abed doesn't ask Troy to be his roommate, Troy is left pondering their friendship. I'm sure Abed based the decision on some random classic sitcom trope.

Parks & Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Leslie wants to hold a children's concert in this Season 2 finale, but the visiting state accountant Adam gets in the way. Rob Lowe guest stars (R.I.P. Robert from "Brothers & Sisters").

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC) - The hospital is under siege from a gunman in tonight's two-hour season finale. Expect lots of drama and some big news from Meredith.

What to Watch on Thursday: Tim Conway guest stars on "CSI"

Community (8pm, NBC) - I'm sorry, but this show is way funnier than "The Office" or "30 Rock" right now, so you should be watching. Tonight, Jeff and Brita go head-to-head with school bullies and their moms (Lisa Rinna), and Troy and Abed make a list of goals to complete before graduation.

Parks & Recreation (8:30pm, NBC) - Also funnier than "The Office" and "30 Rock."

CSI (9pm, CBS) - Tim Conway and Jennifer Tilley guest star in an episode in which a legendary comedian is found murdered shortly before he's scheduled to reunite with his old partner.

Private Practice (10pm, ABC) - Violet is back and wants joint custody of Lucas, so Pete (Tim Daly) hires a tough lawyer and everyone in the office faces seeing their private lives made public in court.

The Marriage Ref (10pm, NBC) - The panel tonight includes Sarah Silverman, Matthew Broderick, and Martin Short.

How to watch CBS dramas preempted by ACC tourney

If you want to watch any of the CBS dramas preempted by ACC Tournament games Thursday night and tonight, let's hope you have plenty of DVR space (especially if you're recording in HD).

"CSI," "The Mentalist," "Ghost Whisper," "Medium," and "Numb3rs" will all air Saturday night after midnight. WRAL recommends you set your DVR or TIVO to record from 11:30pm Saturday to 6am on Sunday.

There's a good chance tonight's "Numb3rs" season finale could also be a series finale. The show isn't doing great in key demographics and show star Rob Morrow has joined ABC's new legal pilot “The Whole Truth." CBS says no definite decision has been made yet.

What to Watch on Saturday: SNL premieres with Megan Fox and U2

It's repeat night, so you can catch up on some of the premieres you may have missed earlier this week.

CBS has "CSI" with Laurence Fishburne at 8pm and "The Good Wife" at 9pm. If you missed "The Good Wife," you should tune in.

NBC airs "Law & Order" again at 8pm, followed by "Mercy" at 9pm, and "Law & Order: SVU" at 10pm.

ABC has college football -- Iowa at Penn State.

Also, "Making His Band," the P-Diddy reality show airs at 9pm on MTV. Wilson NC's Jamareo Artis is still in the competition.

And if you're hooked on "The Locator," as we are, tonight Troy Dunn will facilitate a reunion between a woman and the daughter she gave up for adoption. That's on at 9pm on We (channel 61 on cable).

The biggest news of the night is the premiere of "Saturday Night Live," with summer It-Girl Megan Fox and musical guest U2. A little SNL summer controversy involved Lorne Michaels cutting solid performers Micheala Watkins and Casey Wilson from the show. The very funny Watkins was known for her portrayal of Arianna Huffington and Hoda from "The Today Show." Michaels replaced Watkins and Wilson with two women from The Upright Citizens Brigade.

What to Watch on Thursday: FlashForward debuts and Grey's returns

FlashForward (8pm, ABC) - This is ABC's big new drama premiere, and it stars Joseph Fiennes (left, from "Shakespeare in Love") as an FBI agent trying to get to the bottom of a weird phenomenon in which a worldwide blackout allowed people to see into their futures. Everyone sees one precise point in time: 10pm on April 29, 2010. Apart from that being my birthday, what is significant about that date? And what do the visions mean? ABC is counting on this one.

Grey's Anatomy (9pm, ABC)
- "FlashForward" is followed by the two-hour premiere of "Grey's." Unless you've been living under a rock, you already know the answer to the cliffhangers about what happened to George and Izzie, but I won't spoil it for you rock-dwellers. Let's just say the doctors are searching tonight for ways to deal with their grief.

CSI (9pm, CBS) - It looks like this could be an entirely different show this season. Not only did show star William Petersen leave "CSI" before last season, the show also just lost Jorja Fox and Gary Dourdan. But Laurence Fishburne is still on board, and he's searching for a new serial killer, Dr. Jekyll.

The Mentalist (10pm, CBS) - Fresh off an Emmy nomination, Simon Baker resumes his role as faux-psychic and police consultant Patrick Jane. This season, a new agent (Terry Kinney from "Oz") shows up to snatch away the Red John case, which is Jane's passion. The battle between Jane and Agent Bosco will play out over the course of the season.

These shows aren't season premieres, but don't forget NBC's night of comedy (which ends at 10pm, wink wink) and new episodes of "Bones" and "Fringe" on Fox, as well as "Survivor" at 8pm on CBS and "Vampire Diaries" at 8 on the CW. Also, new episode of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on FX at 10, and over on Bravo's "Real Housewives of Atlanta," Kim's mysterious sugar daddy Big Papa returns!

Why CSI's 'Gil Grissom' left his hit show

William Petersen, the star of CBS's megahit show CSI, has departed the hair-and-fiber crime drama after nine years. Why? He was too comfortable.

In a revealing interview on the subject (and his only one so far), Petersen tells Entertainment Weekly
that he felt too safe playing Gil Grissom year after year after year,
and that he feared he was going to "atrophy" as an artist. Petersen is
currently living in Chicago and doing local theater. His last show will
air on January 15.

N.C. State University has received a federal grant to standardize crime scene investigation training throughout North Carolina.

The initiative is expected to lower the overall cost of such training. Read more here
