Butler High coach challenges recruiters

RALEIGH – After leading Matthews Butler High to its second straight North Carolina state 4-AA football title on Saturday, Bulldogs coach Mike Newsome made an emotional recruiting pitch for senior running back Jahwan Edwards.

“Why the big schools aren’t in here trying to sign this guy, I just have no idea,” Newsome said after a 44-0 win over Wake Forest-Rolesville in N.C. State’s Carter-Finley Stadium.

Irving, who is from West Orange, N.J., failed to score in the first 16 minutes, 33 seconds, but erupted for 17 of his 21 points in the second half as the Blue Devils defeated Butler 82-70 at the Izod Center in a meeting of the teams who played in the NCAA final last season.

ESPN's Hannah Storm asked Doug Gottlieb on SportsCenter this morning if
Butler could pull off an historic upset, like N.C. State or Villanova, in tonight's national championship game.
