UNC starting slots still up for grabs

CHAPEL HILL — With two weeks left before the season opener against McNeese State, North Carolina sophomore Kendric Burney has almost certainly wrapped up the starting position at one corner.

But coach Butch Davis said after Saturday’s scrimmage that he’s still a ways to naming a starter at the other.

Why?

UNC focusing on something 'special'

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina junior Ryan Taylor enjoyed making the switch from tight end to linebacker last spring and hopes to get in on some defensive plays this season.

But his specialty remains his hard-hitting style on special teams — a facet of the game to which the team has dedicated a third of each practice late this week.

“When I’m playing linebacker or tight end, I have to be a little bit more reserved,’’ Taylor, from Winston-Salem, said. “But when I’m playing on special teams, they just kind of give you a direction to go and say ‘go!” and you just go as hard as you can. And everybody’s going full speed – and if you miss a tackle, it’s because you’re going full speed … I like it because I feel like I can open up and just hit people, fly around.”

UNC defense wins ... in bowling

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina’s football team took a break from training camp Wednesday morning to try another form of competition: bowling.

The Tar Heels showed up for their scheduled 8 a.m. meeting to find out they were heading to Mardi Gras Bowling Center rather than the practice field — a way give the players a break from the grind while promoting team unity.

UNC's Jones may practice Monday

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina coach Butch Davis said he is hopeful that Burlington wide receiver Dwight Jones will be able to practice with the team Monday, after the Tar Heels take Sunday off.

Jones, who spent last week in training camp at Division II Valdosta State, signed scholarship papers with UNC on Friday after it was determined that his academics were judged under the wrong set of criteria — leaving him eligible to play Division I football. The NCAA granted him a waiver that allows him to play this season.

Davis answered questions about Jones and the situation after Saturday’s scrimmage, which was closed to the media after the first five minutes:

Pleasant surprises for Davis at camp

CHAPEL HILL — With Kentwan Balmer and Hilee Taylor both drafted into the NFL, North Carolina coach Butch Davis began training camp with concerns about his defensive line.

Five days into practice, he's starting to feel a little better

UNC picked to finish second in Coastal

GREENSBORO, Ga. — UNC coach Butch Davis said he was "a little surprised" that his Tar Heels, who won only four games last season, were picked to finish second in the Coastal Division, behind Virginia Tech. Carolina even received four first-place votes from the media.

"We don't mind the high expectations,'' he said. "...There will be very few years that the media and fans will have higher expectations than the coaches. We realize it's not going to happen overnight, but we're moving in the right direction with our program. When you take a look at the votes ... I don't think it was a landslide for second, third and fourth."

Davis optimistic about running attack

DURHAM — North Carolina coach Butch Davis said Thursday he is optimistic about his team's running game after watching wide-receiver-turned-running-back Greg Little average 123 yards in the final two games of last season.

But Little, a sophomore, can't do it alone.

Butch Davis Needs More Victory Bell

After a lackluster season, Butch Davis admits he could've used a little more Victory Bell.
