RDU volume rises; Burger King planned

Raleigh-Durham International Airport broke a 20-month losing streak in November, when airline passenger counts were 2 percent higher than during the same month in 2008.

It marked the first month since March 2008 that RDU registered a year-to-year gain, Bruce Siceloff reports our brother blog Crosstown Traffic. RDU reported that 742,696 travelers flew in or out of the airport in November, 2 percent more than in November 2008.

Also today, RDU said that Charlotte-based Prospect Foods LLC will open a Burger King restaurant in late fall 2010 on Aviation Parkway, next to the Sheetz station at the corner of National Guard Drive. RDU officials hope to find another restaurant to serve as a third tenant at the site it calls Aviation Station.

RDU has served 8.2 million travelers during the first 11 months of the year, 8 percent less than the same period in 2008. December numbers are expected to show continued improvement with the busy holiday traffic.
