THE NEW FALL SEASON: "Grimm"

I recently did an interview with a writer who said everything we fear and everything we need to overcome those fears are in fairy tales. That's good to keep in mind while watching "Grimm" (9 tonight, NBC) a clever show that uses fairy tales as fodder for a police procedural.

Nick Burckhardt (David Giuntoli) is a detective in Oregon, and, it turns out, a Grimm family member. That makes him capable of seeing and killing the monsters hidden among us. As he and his partner Hank (Russell Hornsby) are searching for a monster attacking women, Nick is learning more about his legacy from his dying aunt (Kate Burton). Along the way, he meets Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell), a werewolf who has learned to control his ways.

THE NEW FALL SEASON: "Ringer"

"Ringer" (9 tonight, the CW) brings back Sarah Michelle Gellar as identical twin sisters, one poor and rehabbing and on the run; the other rich and miserable.

When the rich one seemingly commits suicide, poor sister steps into her life -- and her problems. Those problems include a trouble marriage and an especially tricky affair. And then there's the fact that poor sister is wanted alive as a witness by the police and wanted dead because she witnessed that crime.

Though nowhere near the smart, nuanced storytelling of "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer," the show's fun; there are a lot of delicious twists to build on. Sadly, the CGI budget must be small; I think I could see the green screen when the two Sarahs appeared together.

What to Watch on Friday: Football and marathons

Better Off Ted / Scrubs (ABC) - After the Rose Bowl game between Ohio State and Oregon (start time 5pm), ABC will show new episodes of "Better Off Ted" and "Scrubs" -- look for them at approximately 8:30pm.

Sugar Bowl (8:30pm, Fox) - Or, if you still need your football fix, you can flip over to the Sugar Bowl after the Rose Bowl and watch Cincinnati vs. Florida.

I'm not much for football, so I am more inclined to tune in to the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" marathon. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of great marathons on today -- from "The Twilight Zone," "Criminal Minds," and "Law & Order: SVU" to "Looney Tunes," "Tom & Jerry," and more
