Light registration for student assignment public hearing

The interest in speaking at Thursday's student assignment public hearing at Broughton High School hasn't been very high.

Wake County school officials say only 15 people have pre-registered online to speak for two minutes at the meeting. Online registration ends at 11:59 p.m. tonight.

You can also register at the door tomorrow from 4 to 4:50 p.m.

Timing of the Oct. 18 vote on the student assignment plan

The timing of the vote on the new Wake County student assignment plan is drawing some varied reactions.

As noted in today's article, school board chairman Ron Margiotta and vice chairman John Tedesco said they need to adopt the plan next month to meet the timetable to get it implemented in the 2012-13 school year. Both board members set the Oct. 18 vote after meeting with Superintendent Tony Tata this week.

“It’s not going to be rushed, but neither does it need to be delayed,” Margiotta said. “Staff needs time. It’s a major change.”

School board to vote Oct. 18 on student assignment plan

Pencil in Oct. 18 as the scheduled date for the Wake County school board vote on the new student assignment plan.

In addition to telling them the date of the scheduled vote, Superintendent Tony Tata also told board members today that a public hearing on the plan has been scheduled for Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. at Broughton High School. If the board adopts Oct. 18 then it's set for implementation next school year.

Once the plan is approved, staff would need to market the plan to the community so that people would know to participate in the lottery if they want to change schools or if they are new to the district. The magnet selection lottery could be held as early as December followed by the application process for other schools..

In the meantime, staff will still present the final plan to the board on Tuesday. But school officials say that there won't be a vote that day.

Letting the Mordecai families stay in Broughton's feeder pattern

The Mordecai families who attend Conn Elementary as their base school got what they wanted at tonight's Wake County student assignment meeting at Broughton High School.

Superintendent Tony Tata told the parents that he had made the decision today to recommend that Conn's base students not be placed in the new feeder pathway that will send the school's magnet students to Southeast Raleigh High. Instead, the base students will keep the historic feeder pattern that will let them stay at Broughton.

Tata is doing the same thing for the Conn base students as what he decided to do Monday for their peers at several other magnet schools.

Since Monday, the feeder pattern for Broughton has been adjusted for it to now include base students from Conn, Joyner, Underwood and Wiley elementary schools. How this impacts Broughton remains to be seen.

Parents at magnet schools lobbying for feeder path changes

Wake County school administrators are dialing back their recommendations to have K-12 magnet feeders as part of the new student assignment plan.

As noted in today's article, the revised draft feeder plan list posted on Monday includes a number of changes requested by parents. Those parents mounted aggressive campaigns to keep their existing feeder patterns as opposed to being put in new ones that would have them go to magnet secondary schools.

Some of the most vocal opposition came from families at Brooks, Douglas and Joyner elementary schools. They wanted to keep their historic feeder patterns that had them going to closer non-magnet secondary schools.

Thursday night updates

Broughton-Garner live game updates

Game over: Garner 37, Broughton 13

Garner increased its lead on a three-yard run by running back Juwan Moye to start the fourth quarter.

The Caps did force another turnover, a second fumble recovery by linebacker Alex Mikels, but running back Chris Mangus fumbled the ball back to the Trojans deep in their territory. It wasn’t until the fifth turnover by Garner that allowed the Caps to score, this time on a 10-yard run by Mangus.

Garner ended the game with a 74-yard touchdown run by backup running back Samuel Stidwell.

Third Quarter: Garner 23, Broughton 6

The effort by Broughton’s defense might not be enough for the Caps. To start the second half, Broughton recovered a fumbled snap after allowing the Trojans to advance to its 12-yard line. Although the Caps have forced three turnovers, Broughton has yet to move the ball down the field on Garner.

Garner scored on its second drive of the quarter on a one-yard run by quarterback Vincent Jefferies. With a lead, the Trojans have elected to run the football with running backs Juwan Moye and Demetrius Fairley. Late in the quarter, you could tell Broughton’s defense, which has been on the field for most of the game, has started to get fatigued.
