Millbrook and Broughton trade places

In the N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association poll released earlier this week, Millbrook moved ahead of Broughton in the 4-A poll.

With 58 points, Millbrook is ranked No. 2 in the state, ahead of Broughton by six points, but 10 points behind East Chapel Hill.

Broughton will host Enloe tonight

Tonight's Broughton-Enloe boys basketball game will be at Broughton's Holliday Gymnasium, not at Enloe High, as had been printed in Monday's edition of The News & Observer. Initially, the game was scheduled to be played at Enloe, but a scheduling conflict came up, and the site was changed. The N&O regrets the error.

Broughton students speak

Some students at the Raleigh high school offer their thoughts on the Wake County school board's vote Wednesday to remove the school's International Baccalaureate magnet program.

Broughton and the board

When the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of students and their families are at stake in nearly every decision the Wake County school board makes, we should be able to expect more than the debacle the vote to remove Broughton High School's IB magnet program appears to be.

Broughton's bouncing balls

In October, many Broughton High School parents lobbied to keep the International Baccalaureate magnet program at the school, and the Wake County school board unanimously agreed, right or wrong, to leave it. Now that some Broughton parents see that keeping the magnet program means having to move out hundreds of students over three years to make more room for magnet students, they're trying to say, "Just kidding. We don't want the magnet program any more." Lots and lots of side issues here (not to mention falling dominoes) that could be argued all day, but the board needs to rethink its apparent willingness to reverse course on Broughton now. Let's remember that 30 percent of the kids there are magnet students — which means 600 kids could be affected by yanking the IB program.
