Bobby Brown's side of the story


Tonight on VH1's "Behind the Music" ( 10 p.m.) the show about celebrity high and lows features Bobby Brown.

After Oprah Winfrey's interview with his ex-wife Whitney, Bobby had a muted response. Maybe it's because he knew his response was coming.

Maybe it's me, but the second part of Oprah & Whitney's chat seemed both more emotional and, maybe because of that, less skillful on Oprah's part.

Oprah, a good interviewer but certainly never a proponent of objectivity, let her love for Whitney overflow, and so, some things were left unexplored.

Indeed, as Whitney sang Oprah teared up. She told Whitney she had been praying for her. She told Whitney she loved her. No sign that Bobby was in anyone's prayers.

In the days before her interview with Whitney Houston aired, Oprah Winfrey said it was her best interview ever.

Having seen part one, I'm not so sure.

I'm not saying that Oprah did a bad job. Oprah, I think, is a pro with celebrity interviews. She has this way of questioning people that is direct but not confrontational, warm but not cuddly, and she bores in to get her subjects to explain exactly what they mean, without the person feeling like they were interrogated.

BET Awards 09: A Message to Michael

Timing turned the BET awards 2009 into the first televised tribute to the life and music of Michael Jackson.

And it was officially sanctioned -- father Joe Jackson was in the audience (with, naturally, Al Sharpton) and a brief, onstage, appearance by Janet Jackson. Clad in all-white, she teared up as she reminded the audience that while MJ was an icon to them, to the Jacksons he was family.
