North Carolina beats rival Duke 37-21

Updated 10:05 p.m.

CHAPEL HILL – Bryn Renner didn’t let the moment escape.

After everything the Tar Heels had been through this year – the nine NCAA violations, their coach being fired before the season began, and losing four ACC games in a little more than a month – Renner wanted to thank his leader, the man who he said pushed the Tar Heels to another win: coach Everett Withers.

UNC’s 37-21 victory over rival Duke on Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium increased the Tar Heels' postseason bowl prospects, and it allowed them to keep the Victory Bell. But this win also allowed Renner to thank Withers and give him a game ball in front of his teammates in the locker room.

DURHAM – The odds favored Duke on the play. Tight end Cooper Helfet knew it. That’s why quarterback Sean Renfree threw the ball to Helfet.

With less than three minutes left, Duke was driving for a game-tying touchdown against Georgia Tech. That’s when Renfree threw up a jump ball to Helfet, who is 6 feet 4. Guarding him was 5-10 cornerback Jemea Thomas.

Helfet jumped. Then Thomas leaped over Helfet. Thomas’ interception sealed Georgia Tech’s 38-31 victory over Duke on Saturday afternoon.

NEW YORK – Two hard-driving, enormously successful coaches shared a tender moment Tuesday night after Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski became the winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball.

Moments after career win number 903, Krzyzewski embraced Bob Knight, who coached him at Army and won 902 games in his career. No. 6-ranked Duke had just defeated Michigan State 74-69 at Madison Square Garden with Knight sitting in the ESPN color analyst’s chair.

Both men got choked up as Krzyzewski thanked Knight.

Devils overcome shaky start, beat Bellarmine 87-62

DURHAM -- By virtue of Duke’s inexperience, every game early this season will be an opportunity for somebody to prove they are ready to make a big impact.

After a shaky first half in the Blue Devils’ exhibition opener Saturday night, junior center Mason Plumlee made his case for a prominent role as No. 6-ranked Duke defeated defending Division II champion Bellarmine 87-62 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke led just 32-31 after 17 ½ minutes and 38-33 at halftime before Plumlee, who shot 8-for-8 from the field and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, asserted himself. Standing 6-foot-10 against a team whose tallest player is 6-8, Plumlee scored 10 of his 16 points in the first 10:29 of the second half as the Blue Devils stretched their advantage to 65-52.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Duke University’s football program has experienced its share of mind-bending losses down through the years. On Saturday afternoon at Boston College’s Alumni Stadium, the shoe was literally on the other foot.

Terps too much for Duke in NCAA LAX semifinal

BALTIMORE -- Duke’s men’s lacrosse players could barely move a yard without feeling a nudge, push or knock from their Maryland opponents on Saturday evening.

The unseeded Terrapins chased down the No. 5 seed Blue Devils, thwacking arms with sticks and checking with impunity. When junior midfielder Justin Turri slipped inside late in the game, his shifty moves were met with a ferocious blow that forced him to the ground. He never got off a shot.

That hard-hitting, aggressive style led to a 9-4 Maryland victory over the defending national champions at M&T Bank Stadium in the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse semifinal game.
