Gwinnett learning from Wake

Folks from near Atlanta will be coming to town this week to see what tips they can pick up from the Triangle, including from the Wake school system.

The delegation from Gwinnett County, an Atlanta suburb, will spend part of Friday learning about education issues.

Things will kick off with former Superintendent Bill McNeal and former school board member Tom Oxholm talking about their new book, "A School District's Journey to Excellence: Lessons From Business and Education."

Packing the book signing

A standing-room crowd of around 150 attended Wednesday's book signing for former Superintendent Bill McNeal and former school board member Tom Oxholm

The crowd at at Quail Ridge Books & Music had a number of local business and education leaders. They rushed to buy copies of "A School District's Journey To Excellence" and hear the two authors speak.

"It's like a preview of my funeral," Oxholm told the crowd. "I know who's coming."

Tonight's Wake school book signing

Tonight is your chance to get former Superintendent Bill McNeal and former school board member Tom Oxholm to sign their new book for you.

The book signing for "A School District's Journey to Excellence" will begin at 7 p.m. at Quail Ridge Books & Music, 3522 Wade Avenue in Raleigh. The Public School Forum of North Carolina has been encouraging people to go so it should be interesting seeing who attends.

Quail Ridge is billing the book as "an in-depth look at Wake County schools." "You would be hard pressed to find someone more in the know about Wake County public schools than retired Superintendent Bill McNeal," according to Quail Ridge's website.

Lessons from McNeal and Oxholm

Readers of this blog will definitely be interested in what former Superintendent Bill McNeal and former school board member Tom Oxholm have to say in their new book.

"A School District's Journey to Excellence: Lessons From Business and Education" is primarily geared toward school administrators. But as noted in today's article, Wake residents will be interested in what they say about topics such as diversity, reassignment, the school transportation fraud case and the value of the business community.

For instance, McNeal and Oxholm credit the business community with getting the bond passed in 2006.

Learning from McNeal and Oxholm

Here's something you might want to add (or not) to your summer reading list.

On July 15, "A School District's Journey to Excellence: Lessons From Business and Education" will be released. It's written by former Wake Superintendent Bill McNeal and former Wake school board member Tom Oxholm.

"Rich in examples, case studies, and data, 'A School District's Journey to Excellence' is a much-needed map to excellence in public education," according to the book's blurb.
