Betty White gets Emmy nomination for SNL gig

It wasn't a major category, but it's still major news (to us). Betty White was nominated for an Emmy for her hosting job on "Saturday Night Live" this year.

That, my friends, is what they call "A Safe Bet."

White still has strong competition. She will go up against Elaine Stritch, Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Kristen Chenoweth, Christine Baranski, and Kathryn Joosten in the Comedy Guest Star category. White's episode of SNL also got nominations for writing, directing, art direction, hair styling, makeup, lighting direction.

This is Betty White's 17th Emmy nomination. She has won four times (twice for "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," once for "Golden Girls," and once for "The John Larroquette Show").

P.S. The oh so predictable Betty White backlash on Twitter? Already sick of it. Move on, haters...

"Hot in Cleveland" sets TV Land record

Nearly 5 million viewers tuned in last night to watch the premiere of TV Land's first original scripted show, "Hot in Cleveland."

The sitcom stars Betty White, Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick, and Jane Leeves. It's not groundbreaking for its genre, but "Cleveland" is charming and plenty entertaining.

The sitcom grabbed a 1.9 rating among its target audience, adults 25-54, and a 2.4 rating among women 25-54. The 4.75 million total viewers is a record for the network.

Betty White on "The Daily Show" (VIDEO)

Betty White appeared on "The Daily Show" Monday night and got tons of love from Jon Stewart and the audience, who chanted her name when she came out. It's a really cute interview. What's puzzling is that she once again states that she just won't joke about drugs, but she has a pot joke in the first scene of her new sitcom "Hot in Cleveland," which debuts tonight. Or maybe I'm not clear on exactly what constitutes joking about drugs. But no matter what Betty White is joking around about, she's hilarious. Check out the video below.

What to Watch on Wednesday: "Top Chef" goes to Washington

TV's Biggest Surprises (8pm, CBS) - Jeff Probst hosts a look at TV's 30 most surprising moments, which are commented on by the stars or producers who were involved: Ellen Degeneres, Tina Fey, Arsenio Hall, Regis Philbin, and others.

Top Chef: Washington DC (9pm, Bravo) - "Top Chef" moves to the nation's capital for Season 7. In tonight's premiere, we meet the 17 hopefuls from across the country (none from our area, unfortunately) who will compete for the top spot. Their first elimination challenge is to create a dish that best represents themselves and their region of the country (the southern girl makes shrimp and grits -- how original). Chef Eric Ripert (Le Bernardine) joins the show as a judge this season, so no pressure there...

Work of Art: The Next Great Artist (10pm, Bravo) - We liked last week's first episode (think "Project Runway" for artists). The premiere focused on portraiture, and tonight, the artists must craft a work of art from junk (or as artists might say, "from found objects"). Mixed media sculptor Jon Kessler is a judge.

Hot in Cleveland (10pm, TV Land) - A new sitcom about three 40-something women from LA who get stranded in Cleveland and like it enough to stay. It stars Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick, Lane Leeves, and of course, Betty White. It's better than I thought it would be.

In Plain Sight (10pm, USA) - Mary helps her latest witness, a homeless man struggling with depression, find his birth parents.

Betty White's "Hot in Cleveland" sitcom is charming, funny

It seems appropriate that TV Land's first original scripted sitcom, "Hot in Cleveland," is stocked not with untested up-and-comers, but with some of the funniest (if under appreciated) female sitcom actresses of the last few decades.

The new series, debuting tonight at 10pm, has gotten a good bit of attention because it has put comedy treasure Betty White back in a steady gig, but that's not all the show has going for it. In fact, White's role is relatively minor. The list of stars sounds like roll call from some of our favorite classic shows: Valerie Bertinelli (Barbara on "One Day at a Time"), Wendie Malick (Nina Van Horn on "Just Shoot Me"), and Jane Leeves (Daphne on "Frasier"). Also worth noting is a guest spot by John Schneider (Bo Duke, "Dukes of Hazzard), who, I can't say too many times, has aged very well.

What to Watch on Wednesday: Lots of finales, a promising debut, and Betty White

Good Guys (8pm, Fox) - This is the premiere episode of a new show from Matt Nix, the creator of "Burn Notice," starring Bradley Whitford (Josh on "West Wing") and Colin Hanks ("Mad Men," son of Tom) as two mismatched Dallas cops. Whitford's character, Dan Stark, is stuck in the 1980s and resists the more modern crime fighting techniques his partner Jack Bailey pushes. Because of Stark's attitude, and because Bailey corrected a superior's grammar, the duo is relegated to working small cases, such as tonight's Case of the Stolen Humidifier. It's funny and has lots of action. Sounds like a winner.

I Get That A Lot (8pm, CBS) - Celebrities take on ordinary jobs to trick us unsuspecting regular folk. Tonight, Tim Gunn runs the counter at a fast food joint, Martha Stewart works in a craft shop, Wynona Judd poses as a tire store clerk, and Nick Jonas vexes teens in a clothing store.

The Middle (8:30pm, ABC) - The hottest actor in Hollywood guest stars tonight in this sitcom's first season finale. Betty White plays a librarian who threatens to hold Brick back in the 3rd grade because of 31 overdue library books (as well she should!).

Modern Family (9pm, ABC) - In this season finale, Claire tries to organize a family portrait, Jay helps Luke with a school project, and Cameron gets a job as a wedding singer (pure genius!).

Keep reading for more finales, plus a Justin Bieber appearance...

Betty White & Tracy Morgan: Two of TV's funniest get together

This week's issue of New York magazine is about the TV season, and wisely, they decided to feature two of this season's (and other seasons) funniest folks: Betty White and Tracy Morgan.

Betty, as you know, killed recently on "Saturday Night Live" and Tracy is crazy wonderful on "30 Rock" each week.

Check out some behind-the-scenes footage of the photo shoot:

Betty White dress rehearsal clips from SNL

While adding video links to last night's SNL recap, I came across some clips from the show's dress rehearsal of sketches that didn't make it on air.

There was a revival of Rachel Dratch's "Debbie Downer," Molly Shannon's squirmy "Joyologist" who brought along her new friend Bedelia (Betty White). The "Debbie Downer" sketch was really funny, but good call on cutting the "Joyologist."

My favorite cut sketch was Amy Poehler and Rachel Dratch on the cable access show, "Bronx Beat." Poehler and Dratch were fantastic, and Betty White came out as Poehler's critical mother, who has lived in Florida awhile and now has an accent. An accent isn't all she brought back from Florida. Check out the video below.

No need to worry. Betty White kills on SNL. (VIDEO)

Betty White told reporters last week that she was actually a little nervous about hosting "Saturday Night Live." Turns out there was no need for the 88-year-old comedian to fear her big gig at Studio 8H. White had great material and was absolutely fantastic. In fact, there were so many funny -- and raunchy -- moments, it's hard to single out just a few. But I'll try.

Perhaps the one most likely to go down in SNL legend will be the skit in which Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer discuss White's, um, baked goods, on their NPR food show, "Delicious Dish." Not since Alec Baldwin hawked his famous "Schweddy Balls" in the same sketch have I felt so conflicted about laughing so hard. (White's video below)

What to Watch on Saturday: Saturday night means Betty White

Golden Girls marathon (6pm-1am, WeTV) - "Back in St. Olaf..." Kick off your night of Betty White with a special "Golden Girls" marathon featuring "Best of Betty" episodes. You'll get a welcome overload of wicker furniture, cheesecake, decorative sweaters, and stories about Rose's hometown of St. Olaf. If you want to study ahead, check out this cool Entertainment Weekly slideshow featuring some of Rose's best rants.

Meet My Mom (9pm, Hallmark) - An original Hallmark movie about a divorcee (Lori Loughlin) who falls for a soldier (Johnny Messner) who is mentoring her son while he's home on leave. The budding romance is complicated by the soldier's upcoming deployment. Sadly, Betty White is not in this movie.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - You have to stop watching your "Golden Girls" marathon at 11:30 so you can catch the main event: Betty White finally hosts SNL, and the musical guest is Jay-Z. Is this over-hyped? Maybe. But we still think it's going to be fantastic -- as long as the SNL writers step up and give Betty some good material.
