Wake County school board member Jim Martin warning of unintended consequences of new feeder patterns

The potential impact of the feeder patterns on school demographics is one reason members of the Democratic majority on the Wake County school board are raising concerns about the new student assignment plan.

As noted in today's article, Democratic school board member Jim Martin cited his concerns about Carnage Middle School as an example of how the feeders can change a school. Martin said he's familiar with Carnage because his son is a magnet student there.

The particular issue at Carnage is that Walnut Creek Elementary will feed into the school starting in the 2012-13 school year. With Walnut Creek being such a large part of the feeder, he said it could hurt Carnage's Gifted and Talented/AG Basics program.

Enloe High principal to oversee magnet school program

The Wake County school board announced tonight that two schools are getting new principals and that Enloe High School's principal is moving to Central Office to oversee the magnet school program.

Beth Cochran, Enloe's principal since 2005, will now become the senior director of magnet programs. Enloe, located in East Raleigh, is the school system's flagship magnet school.

Wade Martin was named principal of Middle Creek High in Cary with a salary of $94,700 a year. He's been principal of Martin Middle since 2006.

Looking at the divide at Enloe High School

Is Enloe High School a tale of two schools with one for magnet students and another for base students?

As noted in today's article by Jane Stancill, students and parents aren't disputing that the advanced courses at Enloe are largely made up of white and Asian students with the regular courses are often predominantly black and Latino. But they disagreed on whether that's a big problem for Enloe.

The highly visible role that Enloe students and parents have taken fighting the Wake County school board over eliminating the diversity policy has put the situation at the school under the microscope.

Beefing up security at Enloe

As some of you have talked about, one Enloe High student was robbed at gunpoint and another was assaulted while walking to school on Thursday.

Enloe Principal Beth Cochran is telling parents that security is being beefed up on campus as a result. She also said that Raleigh police have been asked to step up patrols around campus.

Here is the text of the telephone message Cochran left with parents today:

Enloe cancels Homecoming Dance

Enloe High School officials are saying there's no connection between the cancellation of the Homecoming Dance and pep rally and a gang-related fight earlier this month.

On Sept. 11, six Enloe students were arrested after a series of fights at school that Raleigh police have labeled as gang-related. It was on the minds of some Enloe students when it was announced Thursday that the dance was canceled.

Enloe Principal Beth Cochran said the Oct. 4 dance was canceled strictly because not enough tickets were sold. She said only 180 tickets were sold instead of the 300 needed to break even.
