What to Watch on Tuesday: 'Pioneers of Television' returns with look at female comedians

Pretty Little Liars (8pm, ABC Family) - Aria, Emily and Spencer think Mona has regressed to her old bad behavior, but they have no proof, and Hanna has doubts about their claim.

Pioneers of Television (8pm, UNC-TV) - The Season 3 premiere spotlights female comedians, including stand-ups Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers, and sitcom stars like Lucille Ball, Marla Gibbs, Mary Tyler Moore and Betty White. Also, Carol Burnett shares stories about her variety show, and there is commentary from Margaret Cho and Tina Fey.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Tommy introduces his new girlfriend to the gang, and Kate tries to get to know her better. Meanwhile, Ben works on his Rail Mail business plan.

Go On (9pm, NBC) - Ryan decides to go on his first date, but snowboarder Shaun White (playing himself) ends up being his romantic rival.

Real Husbands of Hollywood (10pm, BET) - The lives of a group of Hollywood husbands are tracked in this semi-scripted reality show spoof starring Kevin Hart, JB Smoove, Robin Thicke and others. In tonight's premiere, Kevin kicks a fellow hubby out of a weekly poker game. Adrienne reviews.

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Victor's adoption deadline nears, prompting Julia and Joel to reconsider their family's future. Also, Mark tells Sarah and Hank that he intends to win Sarah back.

Justified (10pm, FX) - Raylan tangles with members of a dangerous family, and Boyd targets an unusual preacher.

Frontline: Inside Obama's Presidency (10pm, UNC-TV) - An examination of President Barack Obama's first term, including his battles with Republicans over health care reform and the economy, and his expansion of the targeted killings of enemies.

Second Generation Wayans (10:30pm, BET) - Nephews of the comedic Wayans brothers seek their own success in Hollywood in this new comedy series starring Damien Dante Wayans and Craig Wayans.

What to Watch on Tuesday: 'Justified,' 'Cougar Town' and 'Frontline' return

History Detectives (8pm, UNC-TV) - A bill of sale for a 17-year-old "negro girl" leads to a story of a person who went from being property to owning property. Also, a 1775 almanac that shows strained family ties during the Revolutionary War.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Kate takes action after Maddie fails a test to get into the gifted program at her school. Elsewhere, Ben encounters a friend from college who stole one of his business ideas. And BJ's mother, played by Jane Seymour, visits town.

The Lying Game (9pm, ABC Family) - In the second season opener, Alec lands in jail on murder charges, but that doesn't stop him from intimidating Emma.

The Abolitionists (9pm, UNC-TV) - This three-part American Experience documentary tells the stories of abolitionists Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimke, Harriet Beecher Stowe and John Brown. Tonight's first part opens with the enslaved Douglass hopeful when he learns of abolitionist movement and Stowe witnessing slavery during her first trip to the South.

The Mindy Project (9:30pm, Fox) - Mindy's brother visits from college and shocks his sister with his plans to drop out of school and become a rap star.

Justified (10pm, FX) - In the Season 4 premiere, Raylan uncovers an unsettling family secret while moonlighting to track a dangerous fugitive. Patton "Draw on Me" Oswalt guest stars, and he's great.

Cougar Town (10pm, TBS) - "Cougar Town" makes the jump from ABC to TBS for Season 4. In tonight's season premiere, Jules and Grayson are in their first week of marriage, but it's not all wedded bliss for Grayson, who has a lot to learn about being Jules' husband. Meanwhile, Bobby tries giving fatherly advice to Travis after he turns 21. Series star Courtney Cox directed the episode.

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Amy has some potentially life-altering news for Drew, and Victor's behavior leads Julia and Joel to question themselves.

Frontline: The Education of Michelle Rhee (10pm, UNC-TV) - An examination of Michelle Rhee's stormy 2007-2010 tenure as chancellor of the Washington, D.C., public school system, including her battles with the teachers' union and her handling of a cheating scandal. Adrienne reviews.

What to Watch on Tuesday: Saftey first on 'Happy Endings,' finale for 'Sons of Anarchy'

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (8pm, CBS) - Burl Ives narrates this Christmas classic, first telecast in 1964. It's not officially Christmas until the first Rudolph viewing.

Shark Tank (8pm, ABC) - "Shark Tank" on a Tuesday? What is ABC trying to do to my life?!? I have routines!

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Kate and Will go on a camping trip together, but their romantic getaway is interrupted by some unwelcome guests.

Happy Endings (9pm, ABC) - Penny (Casey Wilson, left) feels that a post-concussion prescription helmet she is wearing is going to head off any chance for romance with a great guy (Nick Zano, left) that she's met. Meanwhile, Jane's efforts to break into the boy's club at the car dealership hit a speed bump, so she turns to "trophy wife" Brad for help.

Go On (9pm, NBC) - The gang throws a party but the bash falls on the same day Mr. K believes the world will end.

Sons of Anarchy (10pm, FX) - In tonight's Season 5 finale, Jax strikes up a new deal while ridding himself of some old problems. (Fingers crossed that "Old Problems" is Clay's nickname.)

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (10pm, CBS) - If the kiddies are still up and buzzing over the Rudolph broadcast, then … get them to bed, quick!! Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars perform as supermodels prance about in their underwear.

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Mark grows more frustrated by Sarah's relationship with Hank, whom she's helping to mend fences with his family. Meanwhile, Crosby and Adam fight to save the Luncheonette from the mean lady from "Louie," while also recording an album for Glen Hansard.

What to Watch on Tuesday: 'Rizzoli & Isles' begins last stretch of third season

NCIS (8pm, CBS) - A teen girl is kidnapped when a Navy caption, his daughter and her friend are attacked. Meanwhile, Tony gets jealous when Ziva makes plans with a mysterious man.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Kate has a hard time taking her boyfriend Will seriously after she sees the face he makes while playing guitar in his cover band. Meanwhile, Tommy hooks Ben up with a job at the country club, and BJ goes to a support group and gains insight about her friendship with Kate.

Rizzoli & Isles (9pm, TNT) - Jane and the team snoop when a man dies from poisoning at a cafe in a case that brings Stanley's true feelings to the fore. Later, Tommy and Lydia clash over custody of their baby. Tonight's episode is the first in a five-episode run that will close out Season 3.

Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars (9pm, ABC) - A winner is announced in the two-hour season finale.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - Emily treats and infant and a deeply religious man whose faith is shaken following surgery.

New Girl (9pm, Fox) - Jess and Cece begin to worry about their biological clocks when they learn that a friend is pregnant. Meanwhile, Nick and Winston look for inspiration at the zoo for Nick's zombie-themed novel.

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Julia adjusts to staying home while Joel pursues a career. Also, Crosby clashes with a neighbor who could threaten the Luncheonette, parenting issues come between Sarah and Mark, and Amber helps Ryan with his career.

What to Watch on Tuesday: A night of adorable Bens

Hart of Dixie (8pm, CW) - Lemon gets creative as she tries to swing votes in the mayoral election, which polls paint as a very tight race between Lavon and Ruby.

Frontier Earth (8pm, Animal Planet) - A new six-episode series featuring Dave Salmoni visiting the natural homes of tigers, leopards, lemurs, orcas, killer ants, slow lorises and Komoda dragons.

NCIS (8pm, CBS) - In the first of a two-part story, a Navy lieutenant who recently returned home from the Middle East is murdered. Gibbs believes a friend of the victim, a Marine captain suffering from PTSD, maybe the key to finding the killer.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Adorable Ben #1: Ben (Nat Faxon, right) scrambles to find a job so he can participate in Maddie's (Maggie Jones, right) Career Day at school. Elsewhere, Kate is drawn to an attractive neighbor, and BJ deals with jealousy at work after she gets a raise. (This charming little show is in danger of being canceled. Why aren't you guys watching it??)

Animal Intervention (9pm, Nat Geo Wild) - Adorable Ben #2: Alison Eastwood and Billy McNamara travel to North Carolina to try to save Ben the bear from his sad life in a 12 x 22-foot cage. Read more about the episode and about Ben's plight (it has a happy ending).

Happy Endings (9pm, ABC) - Speaking of happy endings... Max has become a hit on the Bar Mitzvah circuit as an energetic emcee and allows Brad to partner up with him. But not everything turns out kosher.

Frontline: The Suicide Plan (9pm, UNC-TV) - An explanation of the shadowy world of assisted suicide, which is illegal in all states but Oregon and Washington. The report features individuals who are opting to end their lives and those who, despite being at risk for prosecution, are helping them.

The Mindy Project (9:30pm, Fox) - Mindy asks Danny to be her gynecologist, thought neither of them can admit their unwillingness to go through with an exam. (Also in danger of cancellation.)

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Camille and Crosby help Kristina and Adam find balance while Kristina undergoes treatment, and Sarah and Zeek worry about Amber's relationship with Ryan.

What to Watch on Tuesday: Ellen DeGeneres receives Mark Twain Prize

Raising Hope (8pm, Fox) - Burt scouts out a gay bar when Jimmy is invited to meet Sabrina's friend and his partner, but Virginia wonders why her husband has started spending so much time there, so she decides to find out for herself on Halloween.

Ellen DeGeneres: The Mark Twain Prize (8pm, UNC-TV) - Ellen DeGeneres is honored with the 15th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Among those paying tribute, Kristin Chenoweth, Steve Harvey, Sean Hayes, Jimmy Kimmel and Lily Tomlin.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - BJ helps Kate find a costume to wear to an attractive neighbor's Halloween party. Meanwhile, Ben and Tommy stay home and hand out candy in hopes of meeting women, but the evening takes a wild turn when Tommy accidentally eats some of BJ's "special" candy from Amsterdam.

Happy Endings (9pm, ABC) - Dave and Alex's inability to commit to a new apartment proves to be quite a challenge for their real estate agent, while Jane pulls out all the stops when she takes Penny car shopping.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - Emily talks about safe sex to some girls at a local high school, and tries to forget about her feelings for Will.

Frontline: Big Sky, Big Money (10pm, UNC-TV) - How the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizens United case, which prohibited restrictions on the amounts of money that outside groups may spend to promote or oppose political candidates and causes, is affecting the senatorial race in Montana. The special also shows how the Obama and Romney campaigns use data analytics to increase voter turnout and shape the election.

The New Normal (10:30pm, NBC) - Bryan basks in the Halloween spirit by decorating the house, going to a pumpkin patch to spot celebrities and ruling over everyone's costumes. David finally rebels when Bryan insists on having a Honey Boo Boo theme.

What to Watch on Tuesday: A birthday bash and another debate

NC Gubernatorial Debate (7pm) - The second gubernatorial debate will air live on UNC-TV, WRAL, WTVD and WNCN (NBC-17) tonight. News 14 Carolina will broadcast the debate on delay at 8 p.m.

Hart of Dixie (8pm, CW) - Zoe discovers an error about herself in her alumni magazine, so she invites the reporter to town to set the record straight.

Raising Hope (8pm, Fox) - The Chances' plot to spring Maw Maw from a nursing home hits a snag when Virginia begins to wonder if she'll receive better care there than at home.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Ben (Nat Faxon, left) throws a party to celebrate Kate's 21st birthday and invites her high-school friend Molly to the bash. Kate (Dakota Johnson, left) is only 21. That explains a lot.

Presidential Debate (9pm) - The second debate between President Barack Obama and former Massachusettes governor Mitt Romney airs on ABC, CBS, NBC, UNC-TV, C-SPAN, Fox, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC.

Emily Owens, M.D. (9pm, CW) - In this new CW drama, Emily Owens, an awkward first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, tries to balance work with romance. Tonight, Emily (Mamie Gummer) begins her internship and discovers her old high school nemesis working there, as well as a guy she had a crush on in high school. Adrienne reviews.

Sons of Anarchy (10pm, FX) - Jax presents a dangerous proposal to the club.

Covert Affairs (10pm, USA) - Auggie, Joan and Arthur call on an old friend to help free Annie from prison in Russia.

Flipping Out (10pm, Bravo) - Jeff and Zoila clash over her work responsibilities, so much so that Jeff considers firing her. Elsewhere, Jeff's client suspects her house is haunted, so Jeff spends a night there to prove her wrong.

What to Watch on Tuesday: Can 'Dr. Horrible' sing his way into Evil League of Evil?

Jane's Journey (8pm, Animal Planet) - The television premiere of Lorenz Knauer's film about the personal and professional life of celebrated environmental activist Jane Goodall.

Raising Hope (8pm, Fox) - A social worker investigating a claim at the Chance house becomes suspicious of the family's treatment of Maw Maw and wonders if they're fit to care for her.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Ben and Kate discover a list from an unfinished scavenger hunt that their dad created 15 years earlier, and they set out on a mission to find the remaining items. Go ahead and watch all the Fox comedies tonight: "New Girl" at 9 and "The Mindy Project" at 9:30.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (9pm, CW) - The popular web series starring Neil Patrick Harris (right) and Nate Fillion comes to regular TV tonight. In the inspired Josh Whedon musical, an aspiring super villain (Harris) tries to gain acceptance into the Evil League of Evil to impress a pretty girl at a laundromat. Unfortunately, his superhero arch nemesis, Captain Hammer (Fillion), keeps thwarting his attempts. If you've never seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Frontline: The Choice 2012 (9pm, UNC-TV) - The two-hour Season 31 premiere features profiles of President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

Go On (9pm, NBC) - Grieving causes Ryan to become a compulsive eater, triggering an intervention from the group.

Sons of Anarchy (10pm, FX) - SAMCRO explores new business opportunities. How's that for vague program info? Next week, "stuff happens."

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Kristina shares her medical news with the family. Also, Victor's baseball game makes Joel nervous and Sarah and Hank share a sensitive moment.

Vegas (10pm, CBS) - Mia's father, a hot-headed Chicago mob boss with a gambling problem, causes trouble for Savino when he visits the Savoy.

Ink Master (10pm, Spike) - The second season of this competition reality series is features a tattoo artist from Fayetteville, Steven Givens (aka Kay Kutta).

What to Watch on Tuesday: Melanie Griffith in 'Raising Hope' premiere

History Detectives (8pm, UNC-TV) - Defense Secretary Leon Panetta helps return a North Vietnamese soldier's diary to his family. Also, the team investigates whether a notebook of liquor recipes belongs to a Prohibition-era bootlegger, and a ledger containing details on how Native American actors were treated.

Hart of Dixie (8pm, CW) - In the season 2 opener, Zoe feels torn between George and Wade. Meanwhile, Lemon returns her wedding gifts and makes strides toward independence.

Raising Hope (8pm, Fox) - In the Season 2 premiere, the Chances meet Sabrina's mother (Melanie Griffith, left) at a funeral for her grandmother. The grandmother's videotaped will has a big impact on Jimmy and Sabrina's relationship.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - Kate lies about her residence in order to get Maddie into a better school district, but when her plan falls apart, she must admit the truth to Maddie's principal (Alan Ruck). Also, new episodes tonight of "The New Girl" at 9 and "The Mindy Project" at 9:30.

NCIS: Los Angeles (9pm, CBS) - The body of a retired marine is found at a bomb-making compound in Afghanistan, following a strike on the facility. The team investigates to determine why the soldier was there and if he betrayed the U.S.

The New Normal (9:30pm, NBC) - David plans a family dinner to tell his mother about the baby. Also, mother-in-law miseries plague Goldie and Shania fears her father will win a custody battle.

Sons of Anarchy (10pm, FX) - A new enemy presents itself to SAMCRO.

Parenthood (10pm, NBC) - Kristina encourages Max to branch out even though she may not be able to help him, while Sarah entertains Hank's daughter and gains more insight into her boss. Also, Victor tries a new activity, offering Julia and Joel a glimpse of the future.

Private Practice (10pm, ABC) - The doctors gather at Addison's home to reminisce, and Sheldon works with a suicidal patient who makes a startling revelation.

What to Watch on Tuesday: Big premiere nights for CBS and Fox

Here we go, people. The fall TV season kicks into high gear this week! These are just the new shows airing tonight. Don't forget that previously debuted shows like "The Voice" (NBC), "Go On" (NBC), "The New Normal" (NBC), "Parenthood" (NBC), "Sons of Anarchy" (FX) and "Dancing with the Stars" also air.

NCIS (8pm, CBS) - The 10th season begins with an emotionally damaged NCIS team searching for criminal mastermind Harper Dearing after a bomb destroys the Navy yard and their headquarters.

New Girl (8pm, Fox) - In the Season 2 opener, Jess is laid off from her teaching job and volunteers to be a shot girl at Schmidt's "rebranding" party. Parker Posey guest stars as a jaded cocktail waitress. In a second episode airing at 9, Jess pretends she's someone else when a handsome stranger (the amazing David Walton, right) mistakes her for his blind date.

Ben and Kate (8:30pm, Fox) - A really funny new sitcom about Kate, a straitlaced single mom, and her older brother Ben, a young-at-heart dreamer. Only watch if you want to see the best new sitcom of the season. My review.

NCIS: Los Angeles (9pm, CBS) - In the fourth season premiere, Callen is placed on suspension for the public shooting of the Chameleon, while Hetty adjusts to retired life.

Frontline: Dropout Nation (9pm, UNC-TV) - The stories of four at-risk students at Houston's Sharpstown High  School, a once-notorious "dropout factory," and the teachers, counselors and principal who are trying to keep them in school.

The Mindy Project (9:30pm, Fox) - A new series from Mindy Kaling ("The Office") in which Kaling plays an Ob-gyn with a messy personal life. There's a lot to like here. My review.

Vegas (10pm, CBS) - A new fact-based crime drama set in 1960s Nevada about a rancher who reluctantly turns lawman. The new sheriff, played by Dennis Quaid, investigates the murder of the governor's niece and locks horns with a Chicago mobster running a swanky Las Vegas casino. Adrienne's review.

Private Practice (10pm, ABC) - In the Season 6 premiere, Addison's romance flourishes and Sheldon reconnects with his ex-wife
