What to Watch on Saturday: 'Battlestar Galactica' weekly fix

Battlestar Galactica (7pm, BBC America) - In case you missed it the first time around, this popular and critically acclaimed Syfy series is re-airing each Saturday night on BBC America. Last weekend we got the mini-series episodes, and tonight the actual series eps begin (two episodes each week, one at 7 p.m. and another at 8). The series stars Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell (right). Richard Hatch, from the original 1978 "Battlestar Galactica" series, appears tonight as an imprisoned alleged terrorist. (Netflix is also streaming the episodes from all four seasons, if you need more than two episodes per week).

Despicable Me (8pm, HBO) - An elite supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) tries to steal the moon from the sky using his vast weaponry and an army of minions, but his evil machinations are undermined by three orphaned girls who see him as a father figure, despite his diabolical intentions.

Carson Nation (10pm, OWN) - Carson is in Odessa, Texas, where a man wants a new look to surprise his wife on her 40th birthday. Carson also helps out a woman battling cancer who needs to feel beautiful again, and a 911 dispatcher who won't go out in public because of the scars on her face.

BBC America begins 'Battlestar Galactica' repeats today

If your pop culture knowledge has a big gap in the shape of 'Battlestar Galactica,' you can join me today in watching the repeats on BBC America.

The network has acquired the complete run of the series and it all begins today. All reports I've read say the series starts at 7 p.m., but there's a two-hour 5 p.m. episode that various BSG geeks tell me we should also catch. So I'm taping all four hours tonight. Join me!

I have heard such amazing things about this series, I hope my expectations aren't set too high.

"Caprica": To a novice, it's pretty frakin' good

I didn't watch "Battlestar Galactica" yet I was intrigued by the pilot of "Caprica," the prequel to that show that airs tonight on Syfy at 9.

Of course, that might be why. For those familiar with this world, it might seem like a retread or simply forced.

Set 58 years earlier than BG, the show focuses on two fathers, Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz), a computer genius specializing in artificial intelligence, and Joseph Adama (Esai Morales), a prominent attorney. (Frakin', by the way, is the expletive of choice on "Caprica.")

What to Watch on Friday: Conan's goodbye and Battlestar's prequel

Hope for Haiti (8pm) - This is airing on pretty much every network in the world. Read more about the program and those scheduled to perform.

Caprica (9pm, SyFy) - The premiere of a new show which serves as a prequel to Syfy's acclaimed hit, "Battlestar Galactica." "Caprica" is set more than 50 years prior to BSG and tonight's episode focuses on a tragedy that impacts the Graystone and Adama families. Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales (left) star. Our review of "Caprica."

Spartacus: Blood and Sand (10pm, Starz) - Lucy Lawless is one of the stars of this new action drama about a rebellious Roman slave played by Andy Whitfield. Tonight, Spartacus and his fellow fighters align themselves with Rome to protect their homeland, but become disenchanted with Rome when their village is invaded by barbarians.

Late Night with Conan O'Brien (11:35pm, NBC) - It's Conan O'Brien's final night hosting "The Tonight Show" for those bozos at NBC, and considering some of his other antics this week, there's no telling what he'll do. It'll be worth checking out. His final guests are scheduled to be Tom Hanks (who gave O'Brien his much-despised nickname "Coco"), Will Ferrell (who was his first guest on the show), and Neil Young.
