Avett Brothers on "Austin City Limits"

The Avett Brothers are on "Austin City Limits" tonight, singing tunes from their 2009 album "I and Love and You."

The folk(ish)-rock band from Concord appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman" back in the fall.

The group Heartless Bastards will also perform.

"Austin City Limits" airs at midnight on UNC-TV.

What to Watch on Saturday: SyFy's spooky "House of Bones"

NFL Playoffs: Ravens vs. Colts (8pm, NBC) - Baltimore goes to Indianapolis for the AFC divisional game.

House of Bones (9pm, SyFy) - An original SyFy movie about a group of paranormal scientists and a television crew who get more than they bargained for when they visit a notorious haunted house in New Orleans. Starring Charisma Carpenter, left ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Greek") and Corin Nemec.

The Wanda Sykes Show (11pm, Fox) - Wanda's guests are Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Aisha Tyler, and George Wallace

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Sigourney Weaver is the guest host and the musical guest is the Ting Tings.

Austin City Limits (Midnight, UNC-TV) - Mos Def performs from his 2009 cd "The Ecstatic," and Somali-born hip hop artist K'naan plays from his 2009 cd, "Troubadour."

Avett Brothers get in touch with their inner Johnny Cash

There's yet another posthumous Johnny Cash album on the way, titled "American VI: Ain't No Grave" and due out Feb. 26 (which would've been the great man's 78th birthday). Along with covers of songs by Kris Kristofferon and Sheryl Crow, the album features some bonafide Tar Heel content -- Concord's own Avett Brothers, Scott and Seth, in cameo roles on the title track. They recorded their contribution last year during sessions for "I and Love and You," which was produced by Johnny Cash producer Rick Rubin.

Of course, we still don't have a Triangle date on the Avetts tour. But their "Austin City Limits" episode airs on Jan. 23.

What to Watch on Saturday: Go from "Underdog to Wonderdog"

The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love (8pm, ABC) - This repeat of Monday night's show is worth watching just to see Jake Pavelka throw a football.

Underdog to Wonderdog (9pm, Animal Planet) - The Doggie Wonder Team tries to help a mother of two overcome her fear of dogs by having her interact with a friendly poodle mix.

48 Hours Mystery (10pm, CBS) - The show looks into the 1991 murders of four teenagers in an Austin yogurt shop.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Charles Barkley hosts and musical guest is Alicia Keys.

Austin City Limits (Midnight, UNC-TV) - New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint  performs from his 2009 cd "The Bright Mississippi."

Avett Brothers roll on -- but not through here

For those of us in the Triangle, the latest bundle of Avett Brothers news is a mixed bag. On the good side, the Concord group's "Austin City Limits" performance will air on Jan. 23; they'll be playing Merlefest in Wilkesboro on May 2; and there's this nifty new video for "Slight Figure of Speech," an anarchic parody of a low-rent shopping network with a vaguely pornographic vibe.

On the downside, the Avetts' latest round of tour dates still doesn't have a show in the Triangle. Their last show here was an opening-act set for Dave Matthews Band at Walnut Creek back in April -- and they've not played a headline show of their own around these parts since July 2008, when they sold out Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. Which means that it might be close to two years between proper Avetts shows here.

C'mon, guys, where's the love? Don't you like us no more?...

What to Watch on Saturday: Flashback to Dave Matthews and Pearl Jam

48 Hours Mystery (9pm, CBS) - Saturday night is typically a night of network repeats, but 48 Hours has two new back-to-back episodes. The first show is about a con artist who assumes several identities in order to gain admission to Ivy League schools; the second episode is about the murder of a Phoenix art dealer whose Las Vegas showgirl ex-wife is the main suspect in his death.

Saturday Night Live (11:30, NBC) - Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("3rd Rock from the Sun" kid actor turned movie star) is the guest host. Dave Matthews Band is the musical guest.

Austin City Limits (12midnight, UNC-TV) - Keep your 90s groove going with Pearl Jam, who plays classic songs and songs from their 2009 album "Backspacer."

What to Watch on Saturday: January Jones and Black Eyed Peas on SNL

Everything She Ever Wanted (8pm, LMN) - Lifetime Movie Network's adaptation of this Ann Rule book is something else. Adrienne calls it "maybe the best Lifetime Movie ever!" Read her full review and tune in (tonight is part one of two parts). Stars Gina Gershon.

Wanda Sykes Show (11pm, Fox) - As of Friday night, Wanda's website had no info about her guests this week. We're watching anyway and hoping it's better than last week's spotty debut.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - Last week's solid show makes me hopeful. Tonight's guest host is January Jones (right), who plays the cold-as-ice Betty Draper on "Mad Men." Musical guest, Black Eyed Peas. Sounds promising. Don't let me down, SNL.

Austin City Limits (12:30, UNC-TV) - Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel perform songs from their 2009 album, "Willie and the Wheel."

What to Watch on Saturday: SVU catch-up night with Rosie Perez

Extreme Sweets (9pm, Food) - Food Network host Adam Gertler (right) tries a sweet so spicy that he has to sign a waiver at a Hollywood candy shop before he can taste it. Gertler also visits Hershey, PA.

The Locator (9pm, WeTV) - A woman who has looked for her mother for nearly 15 years calls on Troy Dunn for help. After a bitter divorce, the woman left her daughter with her ex-husband and has not seen her since.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (10pm, NBC) - If you're like me and don't watch "L&O:SVU" on Wednesdays because it's opposite "Modern Family" and "Glee," tonight is the official catch-up night. This episode is a heavily promoted one featuring Rosie Perez as the wife of a pedophile caught abusing his son.

Austin City Limits (12 midnight, UNC-TV) - Singer-songwriters Andrew Bird and St. Vincent perform.

What to Watch on Saturday: SNL or DMB?

Brian McKnight Show (10pm, WRDC) - Smokey Robinson performs. McKnight also has Giuliana Rancic, Kobe Bryant, and Carmelo Anthony.

Saturday Night Live (11:30pm, NBC) - The hunky and funny Ryan Reynolds (left) is the host tonight, and Lady Gaga is the musical guest. Let's hope the script this week is kinder to newcomer Jenny Slate.

Austin City Limits (12midnight, UNC-TV) - The 35th season of "Austin City Limits" kicks off tonight with a concert by The Dave Matthews Band, who perform from their latest album, "Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King."
