Cross Country season starts with Bay Six Classic

The Bay Six Kickoff Classic at WakeMed Soccer Complex is more a celebration of the new season rather than a competitive event toward the postseason. And Emma Thorpe, like many runners, understands that, which means the Bay Six Classic has its own unique benefits.

More Wake schools added to Newsweek top high schools list

The Wake County school system is trumpeting changes that have tripled the number of schools in Newsweek's latest list of the top U.S. public high schools.

Back in June, only four district schools made Newsweek's list. But following complaints from Wake, Newsweek recalculated the data and 12 schools are now on the list of 1,735 schools.

“We have great schools in Wake County, and we want to make sure they get the credit they deserve,” said David Holdzkom, Wake's assistant superintendent for evaluation and research, in a district press release today. Our teachers, administrators and principals have worked hard for these results.”

On the Recruiting Front: Byrd, Snotherly

Kyle Byrd, rising senior, Holly Springs baseball

Kyle Byrd, a rising senior for the defending Tri-Nine baseball champion Holly Springs Golden Hawks, has committed to UNC-Asheville.

Byrd is the second Golden Hawks player to have committed to a D1 school, as teammate Carlos Rodon has committed to N.C. State. A third Hawks player, Justin Manning, could also end up in Division I.

Ben Snotherly, rising senior, Athens Drive football

While playing scholastic league baseball last night, one of our correspondents got up with Snotherly on what schools were recruiting him for football.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound quarterback said he is being recruited by Duke, Wake Forest, East Carolina, Elon and Richmond. Colleges are extremely selective with scholarships for quarterbacks, so none of the schools have offered as of yet.

Last year Snotherly threw for 2,409 yards while posting 19 touchdowns to just seven interceptions. He also ran for 860 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Alumni News: Hamilton on a tear

Former Athens Drive High baseball star Josh Hamilton was named the American League co-player of the week for his play last week. The Texas Rangers outfielder has rebounded from a slow start to move among the leaders in most AL offensive statistics.
