Friday night updates. East Wake stuns No. 1 Wake Forest-Rolesville in OT with fake field goal. Fuquay nips Clayton in OT. West Johnston out-scores South Johnston. Wakefield out-scores Holly Springs in a scoring battle.

Second round soccer scores

Jordan ousts Broughton 3-0 and will face Green Hope in the third round of the NCHSAA 4-A soccer playoffs.

Athens Drive 35, Holly Springs 31

RALEIGH – Athens Drive trailed in the fourth quarter Friday, but rallied late to knock off Holly Springs 35-31 and end the regular on a positive note.

With the win, the Jaguars became eligible for a wild card berth in the playoffs.

Friday Night football updates

Wake Forest-Rolesville tops Leesville Road 20-14 in overtime. Marcus Jones runs six yards for the winning score. Leesville had fumbled on its overtime possession.  Wake Forest, Wakefield and Leesville Road all finish 5-1 in the Cap 8.(FINAL)

No. 1-ranked Durham Hillside defeated Northern Durham 38-6 to finish the regular season 11-0 and claim the Piedmont Athletic 4-A championship. QB Vad Lee rushed for 138 yards and passes for 161. (FINAL)

Panther Creek got a 25-yard field goal from Garrett Lang in the final minutes to defeat Cary 10-7 and clinch the Tri-Nine's No. 1 seed into the playoffs.

Athens Drive 56, Apex 39

APEX – The state playoffs don't arrive for two weeks, but Athens Drive and Apex met in an elimination game of sorts as three-win teams trying to finish with five for the regular season to earn a possible at-large post-season berth.

Athens Drive took the step forward as Jaguars ended a five-game losing streak to improve to 4-6 with a 56-39 win over Apex Friday at the Cougars' field.

Fuquay-Varina 50, Athens Drive 21

RALEIGH – Fuquay-Varina got four touchdowns from senior running back Cory Hunter on Friday as the Bengals rolled over host Athens Drive 50-21.
It was the Jaguars fifth straight loss.

“It’s tough,” Athens coach Jeff Smouse said. “The kids haven’t quit on us though. We knew this game would be tough because of the size mismatch. It’s just a tough situation.”

Panther Creek 33, Athens Drive 30

CARY – Panther Creek erased a 17-point deficit in the final nine minutes Friday night to beat visiting Athens Drive 33-30 and remain undefeated.

Louis Wilder gave Athens Drive a 7-0 lead when he hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ben Snotherly. Snotherly threw the ball to the right corner of the end zone and a diving Wilder pulled it in near the sideline with 4:17 left in the first quarter.

Cary 26, Athens Drive 20

RALEIGH – Cary sophomore running back Marquise Sherrod-Cooper ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns Friday night to help push the Imps past Athens Drive 26-20 on the road.

Lee County 21, Athens Drive 19

Lee County is turning out to be a serious contender in  the tough Tri-Nine Conference football race.

The Yellow Jackets held on to edge a resiliant Athens Drive team 21-19 to raise their record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the league.

Middle Creek 28, Athens Drive 16

Athens Drive's home winning streak of 11 games was snapped Friday night as Middle Creek quarterback Garrett Leatham threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns to lead his Mustangs to a 28-16 road victory.

It was the first conference loss for Athens, dropping them to 4-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Tri-Nine Conference. Middle Creek moved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
