We can forget about Arnie Osborn running for the school board this fall.
Osborn filed today to run for a seat on the Garner Town Council. In a press release on his web site, Osborn said he is backing John Tedesco for the District 2 school board seat.
Tedesco is running against incumbent Horace Tart, Cathy Truitt and Chris Augustine for the seat. We'll see if anyone else files before the noon deadline on Friday.
No one filed today to run for the school board.
With the end of the filing period less than a week away at noon July 17, several announced candidates haven't officially stepped forward yet.
Two candidates backed by the Wake Schools Community Alliance, Chris Malone in District 1 and the mystery candidate in District 9, have yet to show up at the Board of Elections. But Joe Ciulla, who is vetting candidates for the WSCA, said both people still plan to file.
Arnold Osborn hasn't filed in District 2. But you'd think he'd go through with it after having created his own t-shirts and mugs.
Lois Nixon hasn't filed in District 9. But it's only a matter of time as political strategist Perry Woods is helping her.
Chris Augustine was the lone candidate to file today to run in this fall's school board elections.
Augustine, 43, a self-employed business owner from Cary who lives near West Lake Elementary school, became the fourth person to run for the District 2 board seat. He's talking about reforming the system to give teachers more control over education.
"Teachers unions and school boards are taking away from what students need to learn," Augustine said.
Will a large candidate field help Horace Tart's bid to stay on the school board?
That's Tart's thinking as it looks like there could be four or more candidates vying for the District 2 seat that includes Fuquay-Varina, Garner and Willow Spring.
Tart, a builder and developer, likes his chances because three of his opponents will probably be from Garner while he's from Fuquay-Varina. Sectional loyalties have been a longtime issue in District 2.
It's probably appropriate that Rita Rakestraw will officially "kick off" her campaign tonight for the school board at a martial arts academy.
Rakestraw's kickoff event will be at 7 p.m. at Black Belt USA, 300 Black Belt World Drive in Knightdale. She's been campaigning since March but tonight's event coincides with the official start of the candidate filing period on Monday.
Starting at 8:30 a.m. Monday and running through noon on July 17, candidates can officially file with the Wake County Board of Elections for the four school board seats on this year's ballot.
Unless things changed over the weekend, we should have had another candidate announcing for the District 2 school board seat.
Arnold Osborn had announced on the blog last week that he's running against incumbent board member Horace Tart. The self-described conservative Christian had planned to have an official press release out earlier this week.
Below is the platform he listed on his web site:
