The latest edition of the nearly century-old rivalry between Apex and Cary started bitterly and ended sweetly for Deandre Henry.

The Cary junior running back sat out most of the first quarter as a disciplinary measure, but three-plus quarters was enough for him to carry 18 times for 281 yards and two touchdowns to lead the No. 7-ranked Imps to a 35-21 win over Apex Friday night at Cooper Field.

Leesville Road 34, Apex 14

Austin Berrios had plenty of incentives for making the game-changing play in the second half of Leesville Road’s 34-14 over Apex.

The Pride struggled early as they were tied with the Cougars at halftime on Thursday night. Berrios didn’t have much to show at that point. Plus, Apex’s Quincy Mangum had returned a kickoff for a 95-yard touchdown.

Triangle teams finish well at Senior Softball-USA Eastern Nationals in Raleigh

While many of the rest of us were keeping to air-conditioned spaces, more than 800 athletes age 50 to 80-plus were braving the heat and humidity over the past week to compete in the Senior Softball-USA Eastern National Championships at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh.

Fifty-six teams of 15 players each from east of the Mississippi River competed in 15 divisions and earned the opportunity to compete in the Oct. 15-24 World Championships in Phoenix, said Senior Softball CEO Terry Hennessy of Sacramento, Calif., who was in Raleigh helping conduct the event.

North Carolina was represented by two of the nine women's teams and 11 of the 47 men's teams in age groups ranging from Women's 40 to Men's 80. The Carolina Cardinals of Apex won the Men's 70 Silver title in a showdown of N.C. teams, defeating the Burlington 70s 20-11, and the Carolina Cobras of Chapel Hill finished second in the Men's 55 AAA Division, losing 21-8 to Eagle Tile of Stevensville, Md., in the event's final game Sunday evening. Code Electric of Wake Forest finished fourth in the Men's 60 AAA.

The meet was one of four championship-style meets being conducted for TSA teams by area year-round competitive clubs and community clubs. Greater Raleigh Swim Meet also was held this past Saturday, hosted by the New Wave Swim Team at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

Cary makes CNN/Money Best Places To Live list

Good test scores, among other features, helped rank Cary among CNN/Money magazine's 2010 Best Places to Live in America list.

Cary ranked No. 23 on the list of 100 places that was released today and will be in the magazine's August issue. The magazine looked at figures such as median family income, job growth, school test scores and crime rates.

One drawback, the magazine noted, is that fast growth has resulted in school overcrowding in Cary.
