What to Watch on Friday: Andy Richter as Penny's (young) dad on 'Happy Endings'

Nikita (8pm, CW) - Nikita and Michael learn about a new prosthetic hand that could help Michael return to his old self, but it comes at a steep price.

Profile for Murder (8pm, Lifetime) - A serial killer escapes from prison and stalks the retired criminal profiler who helped put him away.

Happy Endings (8pm, ABC) - Two more "Happy Endings" episodes tonight. In the first, Jane and Alex recommend Max to their longtime hairdresser, who dishes some juicy gossip about the ladies and triggers a sisterly war. In the second, Penny reaches out to her estranged father in advance of her wedding. Andy Richter plays her dad (he's kinda young for that, right?).

Grimm (9pm, NBC) - Rosalee is called up for jury duty and enlists Nick and Hank to stop a Wesen defense attorney from overturning a murder case.

Michael Feinstein's American Songbook (9:30pm, UNC-TV) - Season 3 opens with a look at American musicals with help from Steven Sondheim, Christine Ebersole and Angela Landsbury.

Blue Bloods (10pm, CBS) - Danny investigates a murder in a cemetery and discovers that the victim was a religious woman who was hiding her interfaith romance from her family.

Vice (11pm, HBO) - A new newsmagazine program offering stories from around the world debuts with a visit to the Philippines to examine the violent rivalries that erupt between political opponents. Also, a report on kids who are recuited by the Taliban to be suicide bombers in Afghanistan. Adrienne has a review of "Vice".

"Conan" debut: It's the Conan we know and love

The Bearded One is back.

After an extraordinary amount of hype, Conan O'Brien returned to late last night, debuting his new 11 p.m. talk show on TBS.

No surprise here, but "Conan" is a lot like O'Brien's old shows ("Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien") -- and that's not a bad thing. I loved those old shows, and there's really no reason I can think of for him to drastically change a formula that his loyal Team Coco adores.

In his first episode (titled "Baa Baa Blackmail" -- each episode will be named), O'Brien made a lot of self-deprecating jokes about his infamous dismissal from NBC and about being on basic cable (also not a surprise). His sidekick Andy Richter was back, and really funny (on the couch where he belongs instead of behind a podium). The Basic Cable Band sounded good, and guests Seth Rogan, Lea Michelle, and Jack White -- all good. O'Brien even played a number with White, and you could tell he was having a blast.

In short, the first five minutes of "Conan" -- a short film recounting the upheaval at NBC and his path to TBS -- were funnier than five years of "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

Watch that clip below.

The Leno vs. Conan street fight

You know I couldn't go a day without posting something about Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien.

Here's a good one. Yesterday in Burbank, hundreds of Conan fans held a support rally (in the rain) outside of Conan's "Tonight Show" studios. Two guys dressed up like Leno and Conan staged a fake street fight. At the end of the video, you'll hear Andy Richter address the fans from the roof of the building, and Conan comes out to wave (there are also reports that Conan had pizzas delivered to the supporters).  The fight is funny (and weird).

Conan O'Brien names his Ed McMahon

Conan O'Brien, who is taking over NBC's The Tonight Show (and not soon enough for us!), has tapped his old buddy Andy Richter to be his sidekick when they roll out on June 1.

Richter started out with O'Brien on the Late Night show back in 1993, but left in 2000 to pursue an acting career (Andy Barker: PI was actually pretty funny, but never drew ratings; he also had a great guest role on Monk.). Richter was a guest on O'Brien's final Late Night show this past Friday.
